WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team improved its record to 4-0 on the
season Friday night with a 3-1, upset win over No. 13-ranked Georgetown at
Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
The win marked the third-consecutive season that the College defeated a
nationally ranked team. With the loss,
Georgetown's record falls to 3-2 on the year.
Freshman Emory Camper scored a pair of goals, including the
game winner, while junior Cortlyn Bristol also netted a goal and tallied an
assist on the night. Freshman Aly Shaughnessy and senior Diana Weigel also recorded assists in the victory. Junior keeper Katherine Yount was terrific in
goal for the College, making four saves while surrendering just one score.
The Tribe wasted little time taking a lead over the Hoyas,
scoring in just the third minute. With the
ball near midfield, Shaughnessy delivered a great pass to Bristol on a
breakaway down the left side. With just
the keeper to beat, Bristol faked right and went left, leaving the GU goalie
sprawled out on the field and the net empty.
Bristol finished with authority, blasting a goal from eight yards
out. Bristol's third score of the season
gave the Green and Gold an early, 1-0 lead.
Both teams would have some chances later in the first half,
but the defenses played well, keeping the margin at 1-0 heading in to
halftime. In the first 45 minutes, shots
were even at 5-5, but the Tribe held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at 1-1.
For the first 20 minutes of the second half, both offenses
had some looks on goal, but it was the Tribe who netted the first score of the
second frame. In the 74th minute, the
College was on the attack. Finding
herself in space from about 30 yards out on the left side, Weigel cracked a
shot on goal. The Hoya keeper was able
to stop it, but the insuing rebound went right to Camper, who came through with a
well-placed shot from 10 yards out, pushing W&M's lead to 2-0.
Just over seven minutes later, Camper would strike
again. After a Georgetown turnover near
midfield, Bristol controlled the ball and went darting down the right side of
the pitch. Bristol sent a cross in to
the 18-yard box, finding Camper. Camper
elevated and headed the ball, beating the GU keeper for the score. Camper's second goal of the game, and third
overall, gave the Tribe a 3-0 advantage.
The Hoyas did not go quietly, however, as in the 85th
minute the College surrendered its first goal of the season. After settling a corner kick, GU's Daphne
Corboz dribbled in to the center of the box and sent knuckling shot to the far
post, beating Yount for the score. The goal
snapped the Tribe's 354:00 minute scoreless streak to start the season.
Despite allowing the late score, the No. 13 Hoyas were
unable to muster any more offense and the College claimed a 3-1, upset
victory. For the match, Georgetown
out-shot the Tribe, 14-11, with shots on goal even at 5-5. Corners for the game were also even at 2-2.
With the win, the Tribe starts the season at 4-0 for the
sixth time in program history, the first since the 2002 campaign. In every year that the Tribe has started 4-0 previously
(2002, 2001, 1998, 1997, 1993), the College has made the NCAA Tournament.
The William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will return
to action on Sunday, September 2 when it plays Villanova in the final match of
the Nike Tribe Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriot Invitational. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Martin
Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
