WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team got back to its winning ways on
Friday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field, defeating the
Princeton Tigers, 2-0. With the victory,
the Tribe improves to 5-1-2 on the season, while Princeton falls to 1-4 on the
year.
Headlining the Tribe's effort on Friday were junior Mallory Schaffer and freshman Emory Camper, who each had a goal and an assist on the
night. Freshman Emily Fredrikson notched
her first collegiate point, tallying an assist on Schaffer's score. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Yount made three
saves on way to recording her fourth shutout of the season.
The College's first good look at a score came in the 12th
minute. On the left side of the pitch,
sophomore Dani Rutter found a streaking Audrey Barry. Barry beat her defender, working her way in
to the 18-yard box. Barry cracked a shot
from 13 yards out, but the Princeton keeper saved her attempt.
Just over a minute later, W&M had two really nice looks
at goal, but again were kept off the scoreboard. After the Princeton keeper misplayed a cross,
the loose ball found the foot of junior Cortlyn Bristol. Trying to take advantage of the Tigers'
goalie out of position, Bristol fired a shot, but the Princeton keeper was able
to make a sprawling save.
On the ensuing corner kick, Bristol found Schaffer in the
box. Schaffer settled the pass and
cracked a kick towards goal, but her attempt from 15 yards was also saved.
At the end of a scoreless first 45 minutes, shots were close
with the College leading 8-7, but shots on goal were another story. In the first half, the Tribe was able to get
an impressive seven of their eight shots on goal. W&M also had an advantage in corners,
leading 3-2.
In the second half, Fredrikson almost scored her first
collegiate goal on an impressive shot from distance. In the 47th minute, the freshman settled the
ball in the middle of the field around 30 yards from goal. Fredrikson cracked a shot that short-hopped
the Princeton keeper, giving her trouble, but the goalie was able to corral the
rebound before a W&M player could get to it.
Finally in the 65th minute, the Tribe was able to break
through and tally the first goal of the match.
After taking the ball off the foot of a Princeton player, Schaffer
played a perfectly placed through ball to Camper. The rookie was able to collect the pass and
finish well, beating the Tigers' keeper to the bottom left for her team-leading
fifth goal of the season. On the score,
the Tribe led Princeton, 1-0.
On its next shot some eight minutes later, the College added
an insurance goal to its lead. After a
foul was called on Princeton, the Tribe had a free kick from midfield. Fredrikson played a great ball to the top of
the 18-yard box, finding the head of Camper who flicked on to a darting
Schaffer behind her. On the brilliant
touch pass, Schaffer had just the Princeton keeper to beat. The all-conference
junior did just that, scoring her fourth goal of the year from six yards out to
give the College its winning margin of 2-0.
For the match, the Tribe out shot Princeton, 19-10, with the
Green and Gold getting an impressive 11 shots on goal to the Tigers'
three. Corner kicks were even at 4-4.
The William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will continue
its season-long four-match homestand on Friday, September 23 when the College
will play host to CAA rival Towson.
Kickoff at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field is scheduled for 7
p.m.
