GREENVILLE, N.C. - The
No. 21-ranked William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team tied the East Carolina
Pirates on the road Sunday afternoon, 2-2.
With the draw, both the Tribe's and the Pirates' records on the season
move to 4-1-2.
Scoring goals on the day for William and Mary were junior
Mallory Schaffer and freshman Aly Shaughnessy.
Both junior Cortlyn Bristol and sophomore Audrey Barry recorded their
second assists of the season. In goal,
junior Katherine Yount made two saves.
The College wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on
Sunday afternoon, scoring in the 10th minute.
Running down the right side of the pitch, Barry fired a cross towards the
near post. Schaffer did well to find it, beating the ECU keeper for the first
score of the match. Schaffer's third
goal of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead over the Pirates.
In the 42nd minute, East Carolina tied the match at 1-1 with
a goal from Kelley Johnson, her first of the season. At the end of the first half, the Tribe had
taken three shots, getting all three on goal.
Junior Erin Liberatore led the College in the first half, putting both
of her looks on frame.
Just five minutes after the halftime break, the College took
the lead back. On the attack, Bristol
centered the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box to Shaughnessy. The freshman took a great shot, beating the
ECU keeper with a well-placed ball to the lower-left corner. Shaughnessy's first collegiate goal gave
W&M a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates answered back in the 71st minute, tying the
match for a second time on a goal from Lexi Miller. Miller took a pass from Brett Thomas and
headed the ball past the W&M goalie, tying the contest at 2-2.
Despite a relentless attack, the Tribe was unable to get the
game winner in regulation. At the end of
90 minutes, the stats were decidedly in the College's favor. W&M out-shot East Carolina, 14-7, with
the Tribe getting an astounding 10 shots on goal to ECU's three. Tied at 2-2, the match headed to overtime.
In the first 10-minute overtime, neither team had a great
offensive opportunity. The Tribe's lone
shot came off the foot of Bristol, but her attempt sailed high of the crossbar.
In the second overtime, both teams were able to get a shot
on goal, but neither team would tally a game-winning score. For the College, freshman Anna Madden had a
look on goal, but her attempt was saved by ECU keeper Christiane Cordero, who
made nine saves on the afternoon.
For the match, William and Mary out-shot the Pirates, 17-10,
getting 11 shots on goal to just four for East Carolina. Corners were 5-2 in favor of the Green and
Gold.

16. Kickoff at Martin Family Stadium at
Albert-Daly Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
