Already an All-American
Simply by virtue of racing, Grey will secure his third All-American honor. Beginning with the indoor championships last March, the new system for awarding All-America status is as follows:
-Athletes finishing 1-8 are All-America
-Athletes finishing 9-16 are Second-Team All-America
-Athletes 17-24 are Honorable Mention All-America
Trends in the 10,000m
The 10,000m at the NCAA Championships is often a tactical race, slightly slower but still very tough to win. Grey's career-best of 28:40.33 would have been more than enough to win in five years since 2000, and would have finished in the top four in all but two years, with an average finish of 2.5. His career average, 29:41.62, would still be good enough to earn at least a top-16 finish in most years, with an average finish of 13th.
Familiar Face
Grey has been to four NCAA Championship final sites before this week, and has earned All-America honors twice. At the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Grey's 17th-place finish led W&M to finish fifth in the team standings. A few months later, he ran 13:46.12 for 5,000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing fifth overall.
