WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
(Feb. 26, 2011) - The William and Mary baseball team split a doubleheader
with Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park, winning the first
contest, 14-2, before getting edged in the second, 6-5.
Derrick Osteen led the Tribe (2-6) at the plate,
as he finished the afternoon 4-for-7 with four RBI, two runs scored and three
doubles in the two contests.
Logan Billbrough (1-0) was outstanding on the mound in the
first game, as he worked 8.0 innings without allowing an earned run. The Miami,
Fla., native allowed just four hits and no walks while striking out seven en
route to earning the victory. Despite surrendering just one run through four
innings, game two starter Cole Shain was unable to get out of the fifth frame
and took the loss later in the afternoon.
W&M earned an early 1-0 lead in the first game with a
run in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Lindemuth got things started with
a two-out single to center and then stole second to move into scoring position.
Devin White then followed with an RBI single to right to plate the game's
initial run.
The College tacked on two more runs in the third to build a
3-0 advantage. Ryan Brown drew a leadoff walk to get things started, and Osteen
drove him in with a double to left. Sean Aiken then reached on fielder's choice
to put runners on the corners, and Osteen scored when Jonathan Slattery
grounded into a double play.
Fairfield (1-2) got a run back in the top of the fourth to cut the
margin to 3-1. Larry Cornelia recorded a leadoff single to left and moved to
second with a stolen base. Anthony Hajjar then reached on an error by Williams
and advanced to second with a stolen base to put two runners in scoring
position with one out. Mark Skrapits followed with a ground out to short that
plated the Stags first run of the afternoon.
The Tribe increased its lead to 7-1 with four runs in the
sixth. Tadd Bower drew a leadoff walk, and White took first when he was hit by
a pitch. After a single by Derek Lowe loaded the bases, Kyle Capaldo entered
the game in relief for FU's starting pitcher Scott Gussaroff. Brown then walked
on four consecutive pitches to bring in a run, and Osteen cleared the bases
with a three-run double to left.
With Andrew VanEyck on in relief, W&M pushed across
seven more runs in the eighth. White registered a leadoff single, and Lowe
followed with a double to left to put two runners in scoring position. Brown
then blasted a triple to deep left field to plate a pair of runs. After Osteen
drew a walk, pinch hitter Sean Aiken hit a deep fly to left that was dropped -
allowing Brown to score. Christian Fox then entered the game for VanEyck and
hit pinch hitter Bobby Klein to load the bases before Bower delivered an RBI
single through the right side. Pinch hitter Jackson Shaver finished off the big
inning with a base-clearing double to right.
Fairfield scored a run off reliever Matt Houston in the
ninth, but the Tribe cruised to the lopsided game one victory.
Osteen finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs scored
and a pair of doubles, while Brown went 1-for-1 with two walks, three runs
scored and three RBI.
The College jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game with
a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Aiken led off the frame with a
single up the middle and then stole second. After Slattery bunted for a single to
put runners on the corners, Ryan Williams reached on a fielder's choice in
which Aiken was caught in a run down at third. However, both Williams and Aiken
moved into scoring position on the play. A balk by FU starter Scott Warwick
plated Slattery, and the second run scored on a wild pitch.
The Stags got a run back in the top of the fourth inning to
cut the deficit in half. Cornelia singled to start the frame and
stole second to get into scoring position. Moments later, he stole third and
came all the way around to score when the throw to Williams got away.
Fairfield took its first lead of the game with a five-run
fifth inning. Carmine DeVito and Tyler Wosleger recorded consecutive one-out
singles, and Ryan Furbeck walked to load the bases. Cornelia brought in the
first run when he was hit by a pitch, and Tucker Nathans cleared the bases with
a double to left. After Hajjar walked to put runners on the corners, Jay
McCarthy entered the game in relief of Shain. Skrapits plated the fifth run with a
sharply hit single off of McCarthy's leg.
The College responded with two runs in the bottom half of
the inning to cut the margin to 6-4. Slattery drew a walk to start the frame,
and Williams followed with a single. Chris Forsten drove in both runners two
batters later with a two-out double to right.
W&M got another run back in the following frame. Osteen
led off the inning with a single to left, and Williams later reached when he
was hit by a pitch. Bower followed with a two-out RBI single to right field
that cut Fairfield's lead to 6-5. That was as close as the Tribe would
get, however, as FU's Kyle Capaldo worked a perfect seventh inning to earn the
save and preserve the victory.
Both Slattery and Williams went 2-for-3 with two runs scored
in the second game, while Osteen also posted a multi-hit performance with a
2-for-4 effort.
The teams will close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
