CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The
No. 14-ranked William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team saw its terrific 2011
season come to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 setback in the first
round of the NCAA Tournament against the No. 18-ranked North Carolina Tar
Heels. With the loss, William and Mary's
record finishes at 17-3-2.
In her last collegiate match, senior Diana Weigel tallied
her third goal of the season and the eighth of her illustrious career. Junior Cortlyn Bristol tallied her ninth
assist of the year, ending her First-Team All-CAA season with 23 points.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead on a beautiful day
in Chapel Hill, with Alyssa Rich connecting on a header from 10 yards out.
Just over four minutes later, the College had a great shot
at tying the match, but was denied on a great save from the UNC goalie. Bristol
brought the ball up the left side and crossed the ball in to the box, finding
classmate Erin Liberatore. With just the
goalie to beat, the North Carolina keeper saved Liberatore's shot from seven
yards on a dive.
Two minutes later, the Tribe's cashed in on a match-tying
opportunity. Off a corner kick, Bristol
played the ball out to a wide-open Weigel.
In space, Weigel fired a shot from 25 yards out on the left side,
beating the UNC goalie to the far post.
Weigel's fantastic shot tied the match at 1-1 in the 15th minute.
At the half, the match remained tied at 1-1, thanks to some
great Tribe team defense. In the first
45 minutes, UNC out shot the College, 8-2, getting six shots on goal. W&M goalie Katherine Yount had a terrific
first frame, making five saves to limit the Tar Heel offense to just one score.
In the 67th minute, the Tar Heels were able to net a score
off a corner kick when Rebecca Crabb headed home a ball for the score. With 23 minutes left, the College trailed
UNC, 2-1.
Just after the Carolina goal, the Tribe had its third shot
of the match. After disposing a Tar Heel
player, junior Mallory Schaffer cracked a shot from 16 yards out. Schaffer struck the ball well, but her shot
from the right side sailed just high of the crossbar and out of play.
North Carolina tacked on two more scores in the final 17
minutes and would advance in the NCAA Tournament with a 4-1 victory over
William and Mary. For the Tribe, Schaffer,
the CAA Player of the Year, led the College with two shots on the afternoon.
Despite the setback in the NCAA Tournament, the 2011 season
for William and Mary was a terrific one.
The Tribe won its 10th CAA title in program history and also made the
NCAA Tournament for the 24th time in school history. The College's 17 wins were the most for the
team since 1999 and the 10 CAA conference victories were the most since the
2006 season.
