WILMINGTON, N.C. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team won its fifth match in a row,
pushing its unbeaten streak to six with a 3-0 win at UNC Wilmington on Sunday
afternoon. With the victory, the College
improves its record to 9-1-2 on the season overall and to a perfect 4-0 in CAA
conference play. With the loss, UNCW
falls to 2-9 on the year and to 0-3 in league action.
Tribe junior captain Mallory Schaffer had another stellar
afternoon, scoring a pair of goals and dishing out an assist. Classmate Cortlyn Bristol also had a goal
while freshman Anna Madden tallied an assist.
Junior goalkeeper Katherine Yount made one save in posting her
CAA-leading seventh shutout of the season.
The Tribe got on the board early on Sunday afternoon after
they were awarded a penalty kick in the ninth minute. After a nice offensive
buildup, Bristol controlled the ball in the 18-yard box. Bristol spun to her right and was tripped
from behind by a UNCW player, earning the College's first penalty kick of the
season. Schaffer stepped up to the mark
and delivered, beating the Seahawks' keeper for the first goal of the match.
In the 21st minute, the College and Schaffer doubled its
lead over the Seahawks. On the attack,
Madden sent a great cross in to the area from the right side of the pitch. Madden's pass found the head of Schaffer, who
buried her 11th goal of the season in to the net with a great header. The assist for Madden was her fifth of the
season.
Under two minutes later, the potent William and Mary offense
made it a 3-0 lead over Wilmington with another score. With the Tribe controlling the ball in the
UNCW half, Schaffer took a pass from sophomore Dani Rutter on the right
side. Schaffer did well to find space
and sent a diagonal pass across the field to Bristol. Bristol handled the pass and beat the UNCW
goalie from 10 yards out, slipping the ball past her to the near post.
Just like the Tribe did earlier this week against Georgia
State, the College did not need any more offense, as the three first-half
scores would be plenty as W&M defeated UNC Wilmington, 3-0.
For the match, the Tribe out shot the Seahawks, 11-6, with
the College getting six shots on goal to just one for Wilmington. The shutout victory was the Tribe's seventh of
the season, matching its total from 2010.
With the win over UNC Wilmington, William and Mary pushed
its CAA conference record to 4-0 for the fifth time since the 1994 season. In the previous four occasions the Tribe
accomplished the feat, W&M earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The six-match unbeaten streak for the Green
and Gold is its longest since it went unbeaten in eight matches during the 2007
season.
The William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will return
to Williamsburg this coming week for their final two home matches of the
season. The Tribe will play the Drexel
Dragons on Friday, October 7 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Martin Family
Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The on
Sunday, the College will host the Delaware Blue Hens on Senior Day. Kickoff on Sunday is scheduled for 3 p.m. in
Williamsburg.
