WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary field hockey team put 17 shots in against the Penn defense Saturday afternoon, but were unable to break the goal while the Quakers caught a lucky break and scored late in the second half for the 1-0 win. The Tribe now stands at 2-4 on the year, while Penn evens its record at 1-1.
Box Score
After a scoreless first half and much of the second half, Penn was able to score off a scrum in the circle in the 60th minute. Julie Tahan dumped the ball into the middle of 10 players from both teams, and Sunny Stirewalt was able to get enough of a stick on the ball to redirect it on an angle to the backside post. The Quakers tried to pile on after the score, but the Tribe defense and goalkeeper
Camilla Hill (Williamsburg, Va.) shut them down and gave W&M a chance to win all the way to the final buzzer.
Hill finished the afternoon with six saves, four coming in the final seven minutes. W&M outshot Penn 17-8, with
Maria Caro (Martinsville, N.J.) taking four attempts, and
Danielle Scissom (Virginia Beach, Va.) putting up three. Scissom and fellow senior
Jennifer Harr (Virginia Beach, Va.) each put two shots on-goal.
William and Mary is back in action on Friday, September 17, when it hosts Vermont at 7 p.m. The match will be the 200th for the Tribe at Busch Field.
