Wilmington, N.C. - Headlined by senior
Andrew Hoxie, the William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team had six players earn All-CAA honors at the league's annual awards banquet on eve of the CAA tournament. Hoxie, who led the Colonial Athletic Association in goals, assists and points this season, was selected as the 2009 CAA Men's Soccer Player of the Year in voting by the league's head coaches.
Hoxie was the top offensive performer in the CAA in 2009, tying for the conference lead with 10 goals and topping the league with 11 assists and 31 points. The Newport News, Virginia native, who ranks fourth in the nation in assists per game and 13th in points per game, tallied at least one point in 11 of the Tribe's 18 contests.
For his career, Hoxie ranks among the top 10 in W&M history in goals (35/t9th), assists (21/t10th) and points (91/7th). This is the third time that Hoxie has earned accolades from the CAA. In 2005, Hoxie was named to the CAA All-Rookie, while he earned second-team all-conference honors after leading the conference in goals last season.
Hoxie becomes the fifth player in the program's history to win the award and the first to do so since 1997, when Wade Barrett earned the accolade.
Joining Hoxie on the All-CAA First Team is junior midfielder
Nat Baako, who was also named to the first team in 2008. After his breakout sophomore campaign, there was no letdown for Baako, who scored two goals and was tied for second on the team with five assists. Both of Baako's two goals were game-winners, as the Accra, Ghana, native notched the decisive scores in the Tribe's victories over Hofstra and Drexel.
After garnering third-team all-conference accolades in 2008, senior
Roger Bothe was named to the All-CAA Second Team this season. The Tribe's defensive leader, the Chester, Virginia, product helped the Tribe register five shutouts this season. Bothe was also a factor offensively, tying for second on the team with five assists, while tallying a goal in the College's 7-0 win over Richmond on September 23.
Also named to the All-CAA Second Team was sophomore
Alan Koger, who ranked third on the Tribe with six goals and three assists. Koger scored the game-winning goal for the Green and Gold in its road victory over Georgia State, and also assisted on two other decisive goals for the College in 2009. The award is the second for Koger in his career. In 2007, Koger was named to the All-CAA Rookie Team.
Making the All-CAA Third Team for a second-consecutive year was senior
Price Thomas, who was second on the Tribe in goals this season with seven, while also dishing out three assists. Thomas' best match of the season came against #20 Old Dominion, when the midfielder scored both Green and Gold scores in its 2-0 victory. Thomas also scored the game-winning scores against Temple and Richmond.
Rounding out William and Mary's all-conference selections was redshirt-freshman
Caleb Thomas, who was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. Thomas scored three goals, all of which were game-winners, and also tallied an assist during his first year for the Green and Gold. Thomas is the fifth Tribe player to be named to the all-rookie team in the College's history.
The William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team will look to secure a spot in the CAA Championship match on Friday, November 13 when it faces the Northeastern Huskies in the conference tournament semifinals. The #2-seeded Tribe will face the #3-seeded Huskies at 5 p.m. at the UNC Wilmington Soccer Stadium.
