Tribe Falls to JMU in Overtime

Williamsburg - The William and Mary men's soccer team fell in overtime to rival James Madison, 3-2, on Friday night at Albert-Daly Field. The Tribe converted a pair of penalty kicks, one in each half, but was done in by a Nick Zimmerman goal for JMU less than four minutes into the first overtime period. W&M fell to 5-5-2 on the season and 2-1 in CAA play, while the Dukes improved to 2-6-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Sophomores Price Thomas and Roger Bothe converted the Tribe penalty kick chances for goals on the night. It marked the sixth straight game in which Thomas has registered a point, including five goals over the stretch. The goal was the first of Bothe's career.

The opening chance of the night for the Tribe came in the first minute, freshman back Michael DiNuzzo played a nice ball down the right flank to Thomas. The Charlottesville, Va., native's crossed the ball into the box, but Koger's header from 10 yards out went high of the frame.

The first James Madison attempt on goal came in the sixth minute. A deflected ball was gathered in the midfield by Ville Wahlsten. After dribbling to the right, he cut back to the left before lifting a shot on goal from 20 yards out. McAdams easily made the stop for the Tribe, one of his five on the night.

W&M took the lead with a penalty kick in the 18th minute of play. Senior midfielder Ryan Overdevest made a nice run with the ball at his feet from the left wing into the penalty area. He cut back to the middle inside the area and was taken down by JMU defender, earning a W&M penalty kick. Bothe stepped to the spot and converted the chance for his first collegiate goal, giving W&M a 1-0 lead.

In the 31st minute of play, the Tribe had another chance on goal. Thomas made his way down the left flank before crossing the ball into the middle of the penalty area. Koger headed the ball down toward the center of the frame, but it was stopped by JMU goalkeeper Ken Manahan.

A minute later JMU had a chance. The ball was lofted toward the top of the 18 and Kyle Morsink got to it first. His shot was blocked a bit by the W&M defense, before falling into the hands of McAdams. The Tribe backstop made his third and final stop of the opening half in the 38th minute. Wahlsten corralled another loose ball in the midfield, before touching it to the top of the 18. His low lining shot was smothered by McAdams.

The Dukes came out on the offensive in the second half and found the equalizer in the 63rd minute of play. Back Ekom Etuk played a long service from the right flank. Forward CJ Sapong got on the end of the play, heading ball just inside the left post from eight yards out to knot the game at one.

JMU had another dangerous chance less than a minute later. Sapong found Morsink along the left side of the attacking third. Morsink cut back to the center along the top of the 18-yard box, before hitting a shot toward the right post. McAdams made the diving save to deny the chance.

In the 69th minute, Thomas lobbed a pass into the area intended for Koger, but a JMU defender was able to win the ball heading it away from the Tribe attacker. The ball fell to the foot of freshman midfielder Nathaniel Baako, but his shot from 25 yards out in the center went wide of the right post. Less than two minutes later, it was Thomas with a chance on goal as he bent a ball toward the near post from 30 yards out, but Manahan made the stop.

The Tribe continued to push for is second goal, nearly finding a breakaway chance in the 74th minute. Off a free kick from JMU, McAdams caught the ball and quickly threw to Thomas, who broke down the right side of the field. Thomas attempted to play ball forward to Koger, but a sliding Manahan corralled the chance before Koger could get on the end of it.

The Dukes took their first lead of the match with a penalty kick at the 84-minute mark. The Tribe was whistled for a take down on the left side of the penalty area, giving JMU the spot kick. Morsink step up and drilled a shot inside the left post, giving the Dukes a 2-1 lead.

Both teams made substitutions following the goal as JMU brought on an extra defender and W&M added senior Brennan Wergley as an extra attacker. Wergley started the first three games of the season in goal for the Tribe and serves as the squads back up goalkeeper.

The move for W&M would pay off less than two minutes later. After garnering a corner kick, the ball was deflected back out to the right flank to Thomas. He served a ball toward the top of the 18-yard box, where Wergley made a leaping attempt to get a head to the ball. In the process, JMU defender took Wergley down from behind and the referee awarded the Tribe another penalty kick. Thomas stepped to the 10-yard spot and converted the chance for his fifth goal of the season.

The celebration for W&M would be short lived though as JMU found the game-winner just 3:23 into the overtime period. Nick Zimmerman collected a ball 35-yards from goal on the left side and sent a dipping shot toward the center of the Tribe net. McAdams got a piece of the ball, but it deflected off him and into the back of the net, giving the Dukes a 3-2 win.

The Tribe will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 14, when it hosts VCU at Albert-Daly Field. The kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
