College Soccer News named William and Mary incoming freshman
Roger Bothe (Chester, Va.) one of its top 100 freshmen to keep an eye on in 2006. The College was one of 59 institutions to have at least one player named to the watch list and one of only three in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
Bothe was one of four CAA players to be recognized by
College Soccer News. Evan Newton of Old Dominion along with Richard Edger and Sean Kelley of George Mason were also named to the list. Bothe was one of 24 defenders on the top 100 freshmen to watch list.
The 6-2, 170-pound back led his Thomas Dale High School team to back-to-back 24-0 records with a pair of Group AAA State Championships in 2004 and 2005. He garnered the 2005-06 Gatorade Virginia High School Player of the Year, along with garnering the Virginia High School Coaches Association (VHSL) Group AAA Male Athlete of the Year. Bothe, who recently appeared in
Sports Illustrated's ?Faces in the Crowd', also received Central Region Player of the Year honors and studentsportssoccer.com second team All-America distinction in 2005.
During his four-year career at Thomas Dale, he scored 33 goals with 16 assists and helped his squad to an overall record of 85-5. During his senior campaign, Thomas Dale set Virginia state records for most shutouts, fewest goals allowed and most wins in a season.
Over the summer, Bothe saw action in the PDL with the Richmond Kickers Future. He started the final three games of the season, playing in four matches and 272 minutes at back.
The Tribe will open up the 2006 season with an exhibition contest against Navy on August 19 at 2 p.m. in Williamsburg. The first regular-season affairs for W&M will be at the Wake Forest adidas Classic against a pair of 2005 NCAA Tournament squads. The College will battle preseason No. 3 (
