RICHMOND, VA - The Colonial Athletic Association announced today that recent William and Mary graduate
Lena Sherbakov (Mountain View, CA) has been selected as the recipient of the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for women's tennis. Sherbakov is the first Tribe tennis player to earn the award.
The CAA issues one Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in each of its 21 championship sports. Nominees must be a starter or key reserve on their team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Winners are selected by a vote of the sports information directors at each CAA institution.
A second team All-CAA selection in both singles and doubles this season, Sherbakov was ranked as high as 82nd in the nation in singles and had five victories over nationally ranked singles players. She led the Tribe with 29 singles victories and also had 25 doubles wins in 2004-05 and became just the seventh women's tennis player in school history to win at least 100 singles matches, ending her career with 102 victories. Sherbakov graduated from W&M in May with a double major in mathematics and physics and has been accepted to the University of Washington's prestigious applied mathematics PhD program, where she will begin studying mathematical biology in the fall.
W&M's women's tennis team ended this season ranked 20th in the nation with a record of 20-6. The Tribe won its league-record 18th CAA title in April and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to eventual semifinalist Clemson.
