W&M Men's Tennis Competes at Waikoloa Tournament

WAIKOLOA, HI - William and Mary's men's tennis team opened the spring season this week with three days of competition at the 2004 Rice/Hilton Waikoloa Village Men's Tennis Tournament in Waikoloa, Hawaii. The Tribe posted a combined record of 9-10 in singles and 4-6 in doubles against stiff competition from individuals from Hawaii, Rice and Texas. W&M ended last season ranked 51st in the nation, while Texas ended the year at No. 13, and Rice finished at No. 29.

Highlights for the Tribe in singles included freshman Steven Kane (Nokomis, FL) upsetting the nation's 21st-ranked player, William Barker (Rice), in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of the top flight. Kane eventually lost to eventual flight champion No. 74 Antonio Ruiz (Texas) in three sets in the semifinal round. In the third flight, senior Geoff Russell (Phoenix, AZ) advanced through the quarterfinals by default and defeated Jason Mok (Rice), 6-1, 7-6, to advance to the finals. In the championship, he lost a tough, three-set match to Vuk Rajevac (Rice), 7-5, 3-6, 7-6. Reaching the championship of the fourth flight was junior Alex Fish (Scituate, MA), cruising past Richard Cole (Hawaii), 6-2, 6-1 and Garrett Snyder (Texas), 6-1, 6-4 in the first two rounds. Fish defaulted the championship match, however.

In the top doubles flight, the Tribe teams of Kane/Russell and junior Sean Kelleher (Forty Fort, PA) and sophomore Stephen Ward (Douglaston, NY) each advanced to the consolation finals, deciding not to play their final match against each other. In the second flight, Fish and junior Jeff Kader (Geneva, OH) won their quarterfinals match, but fell in the semifinal round. Freshman Colin O'Brien (Dublin, Ireland) and senior Kal Patrick (Manama, Bahrian) lost in the consolation finals.

The Tribe opens up the spring dual season with a match against Hawaii later today. The Wahines enter the match with a record of 0-3, having lost to Stanford, Texas and Rice this year.
