Baseball Unable to Hold Down VMI

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A late offensive surge in the seventh broke open a tie game as William & Mary fell to in-state rival VMI 10-3 on Tuesday evening at Plumeri Park.

The Tribe (12-15) fell in an early 1-0 deficit in the second inning but quickly responded when Kevin Francella hit an RBI double to tie the game. W&M starter Jett Humphreys went two innings, allowing one run and recording a strikeout.

VMI (22-6) reclaimed the lead in the fourth with a run-scoring single, and later extended its advantage to 3-1 when Bradley Garner went deep in the sixth inning.

The Green & Gold had a quick response in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game with solo home runs from Matthew Kosuda and Sam Kaczmarek. The homer by Kaczmarek was the first of his career.

In the top of the seventh, VMI went back ahead with three runs. Daniel Lingle entered from the bullpen and recorded three outs, including a pair of strikeouts, as the Keydets took a 6-3 lead.

The visitors would add to their lead from there, scoring twice in the eighth and ninth innings to go ahead 10-3. The Tribe was unable to record a hit over the final three innings.

Trace Monroe was the winning pitcher for VMI. Jack Weight took the loss for the Tribe.
