BURLINGTON, N.C.— The William & Mary women's golf team put together its best round in nearly a decade, highlighting the Tribe's performance on Monday and Tuesday in the Elon Invitational in Burlington, N.C.
Jonathan Howard's squad posted a 4-over 288 in Monday's second round, thanks to a quartet of 72s, for W&M's best team score to par since October of 2015. The Tribe finished the event at 38-over par and in ninth place after shooting 299 in the first round and 303 in the final round.
James Madison and Elon were declared co-champions out of the 14-team field at 4-over, while Radford's Mckenzie Weddle took medalist honors at 3-under-par for the 54-hole event at Alamance Country Club.
Faith Garcia,
Jennifer Osborne,
Samantha Skinner and
Reagan Garnsey each carded 1-over 72 in the historic second round for W&M.
Garcia led the way for the Tribe in the event, finishing T-16 at 6-over. The junior fired a 75 in the first round before posting another 72 in the final round on Tuesday. Garcia carded six birdies over the final 36-holes and played the front nine at even-par on the week for her second straight top 20 finish to begin the season.
Osborne was one stroke behind Garcia at 7-over-par to finish T-27. The Tribe sophomore turned in efforts of 73-72-75 and tied for second amongst the field in par-4 scoring, playing those holes to the tune of even-par on the week.
Both Skinner and Garnsey turned in totals of 14-over to tie for 48
th. Skinner posted rounds of 74-72 on Monday before an 81 on Tuesday, while Garnsey was good for 77-72-78.
The Tribe lineup was rounded out by
Lilly Reed Black (80-76-78) who finished in 61
st, while
Katie Suk (82-80-77) competed as an individual and finished T-68.
