WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary head women's tennis coach
Jessica Giuggioli announced the hiring 18-year coaching veteran Steve Schram as the program's assistant coach on Thursday.
"I am very excited to be adding Steve to our coaching staff," Giuggioli said. "He has several years of coaching experience at the Division I level, and has had the opportunity to gather multiple perspectives by coaching at different institutions. I look forward to working with Steve, and I believe his expertise will be valuable to our program and our student-athletes."
Schram comes to Williamsburg with impressive credentials, including 10 years of head coaching experience with five at the Division I level. He owns a career head coaching record of 126-58 (.685), including a 42-24 (.636) conference mark, with stops at Eastern Michigan (2022-23), Southern Mississippi (2018-22), Nova Southeastern (2013-16), and Limestone (2011-13). As a head coach, Schram guided 18 student-athletes to all-conference honors, including four first-team selections, and three All-Americans. His teams have received eight ITA All-Academic Team Awards with 32 ITA Scholar-Athlete honorees.

Most recently, Schram was a teaching professional at Lifetime Athletic Club in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He was an assistant coach in the Big Ten at the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2023. Prior to his work in the North Star State, Schram was a Division I head coach at Eastern Michigan and Southern Mississippi. At EMU, he led the Eagles to six wins and mentored a freshman to All-MAC First Team honors in 2023.
During his four seasons at Southern Miss, Schram guided the Golden Eagles to new heights. The program amassed a 44-14 record in his tenure, including a perfect 28-0 mark at home. The Golden Eagles achieved the program's highest regional ranking at No. 7 in the ITA South Region in 2021 and followed it up by finishing No. 8 in 2022. The 2022 season also saw Southern Miss earn its highest Conference USA Tournament seed in program history at No. 6. During the 2019-20 season, the Golden Eagles enjoyed the best start in school history at 11-1 before the season with canceled due to COVID-19. In total, he coached four All-Conference USA selections (two singles, one doubles, and one freshman) in Hattiesburg.
Schram's first two head coaching stops came at the Division II level at Limestone University and Nova Southeastern University. During his time with the latter, he established the Sharks as one of the top programs in the country. Each of his final two seasons in Fort Lauderdale, ended with Nova Southeastern in the national top 10 at No. 7 in 2015 and No. 8 in 2016. He coached three All-Americans during his tenure as well as the ITA South Region Player to Watch and Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner in 2016. Schram was selected at the ITA South Region Coach of the Year in 2015 after leading the Sharks to an 18-3 record and an NCAA Regional appearance.
As an assistant coach, Schram spend time at Division II power Barry University (2016-18) along with Division I stops at Minnesota (2023), Bucknell University (2008-11), Radford University (2007-08), and Wofford College (2006-07). In his two seasons at Barry, he helped the Buccaneers to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships and a perfect 58-0 record. Schram was named the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018 and took home South Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors in both 2017 and 2018. He worked with both the men's and women's tennis programs as an assistant at Wofford and Bucknell.
Schram played collegiately at the University of Charleston in West Virginia (2001-02) and Florida Gulf Coast University (2002-05). During his three seasons with the Eagles, he helped propel the program to a 48-14 record. In 2005, Schram led FGCU to a school record 19 wins and the program's first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The Eagles knocked off its highest ranked opponent in No. 4 Lynn and ascended to its highest national ranking at No. 7 a week later.
Schram earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science from FGCU in 2006. He received his Master of Education in transformational leadership from Aspen University, Denver, Colo., in 2011.
W&M ranks among the top women's tennis programs in the country. The Tribe has earned an NCAA Tournament berth on 26 occasions, producing 21 wins in the event. Those totals ranks 20th and 27th nationally and second among programs outside the Power 4 behind only Pepperdine. The Tribe has a long history of dominating the CAA, winning 29 of the CAA's 40 all-time women's tennis championships.
In its four seasons under Giuggioli, the Tribe owns a 60-27 (.690) record, including a 30-3 (.909) CAA mark. W&M won the CAA Championship in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Last season, the Green and Gold went 14-6 and advanced to the CAA title match for the 10th-straight season.
