Women's XC and Perry Irons Win Fire Tower Project Run; Men's XC and Brendan DiStefano Earn Runner-Up Finishes

BOONE, N.C. -  Another race and another top-notch performance for William & Mary cross country, this time at the Fire Tower Project Run hosted by App State on Friday evening. 
 
The women's program and senior Perry Irons took home titles in the 6K, while the men's team finished second in an 11-team field led by junior Brendan DiStefano, who was the event runner-up.
 
Running in her first career 6K, Irons covered State Farm Field course in 20:49.2 to take the individual crown. She has improved each race after finishing fourth at the Spider Alumni Open to start the year and second the last time out at the Virginia Invitational. 
 
Sophomore Molly Weithman earned the best finish of her young career, garnering third in a time of 21:42.3.
 
Senior Kelly Ann Sutterfield and freshman Veronica Znajda gave the Tribe four runners in the top 10. Sutterfield posted a personal best of 21:47.5 to take sixth, while Znajda was ninth in a time of 21:53.0. Junior Jennifer Tsai rounded the Tribe's scoring group in 18th overall at 22:13.2. Redshirt freshman Chloe Miller (22:24.6) earned a top-25 effort in 24th.

As a team, the Tribe won the event with a total of 37 points. Host App State was second with 81 points followed by Milligan (103), Charleston (110), Radford (121), JMU (122), and Coastal Carolina (128).
 
DiStefano posted the top finish of his career, taking second in the men's 8K in a time of 24:41.8. Redshirt freshman Collin Walsh followed close behind his teammate, placing third less than two seconds back.
 
Freshman Eli Phillips and redshirt freshman Caleb Wilcox gave the Tribe four runners in the top 10. Phillips (25:06.8) was ninth, while Wilcox (25:10.7) took 10th. Sophomore Wyatt Townsend rounded out the Tribe's scoring group in 11th at 25:11.3. Sophomores Will Griesmer (25:13.6) and Eric Fagan (25:34.5) garnered top-20 finishes in 14th and 20th, respectively.
 
As a team, the men took second with 35 points behind only host App State who totaled 23 points. The Mountaineers are ranked No. 13 in the Southeast Region. Milligan (95) was third followed by Charleston (127), Radford (132), and Coastal Carolina (188).

The Tribe returns at action the Princeton Fall Classic on Friday, Oct. 17.
