TRIBE NOTES
Last Time Out
The Tribe rolled to victory on Sunday, beating Temple 6-0 in Williamsburg. Six different players;
Ivey Crain,
Leah Iglesias,
Abby Mills,
Kenley Campbell,
Mia Suchora and
Ava Marvin, scored for the Tribe, with the goals by Mills and Campbell being the first of their careers. Assists for
Ava Lewis and
Alyssa Kenealy were also the first of their careers. Crain's goal came just 1:18 into the contest and W&M never looked back, outshooting the Owls 27-2.
Fantastic Frosh
Peyton Costello earned Co-CAA Rookie of the Week Honors, sharing the award with Malin Bernt Schöps of Towson. Costello scored the game winning goal for the Tribe in the 88
th minute against VCU on Thursday, capping off a comeback that saw W&M go from down 1-0 with five minutes to play, winning the match 2-1. Costello now has five total points (2g, 1a) in her first five collegiate games, adding a goal against Radford and an assist against George Mason.
Comeback Kids
The Tribe pulled off one of the most electrifying comebacks in all of college soccer this year when they erased a 1-0 deficit in the final five minutes against VCU on Thursday, earning a 2-1 win.
Lindsay Wilson started the comeback effort when a bouncing ball in the box fell to her foot, equalizing the game in the 85
th minute.
Peyton Costello scored the game winning goal just over two minutes later, finishing a tic-tac-toe play that started with
Ivey Crain and
Leah Iglesias and ended with Costello tapping the ball into the unattended goal. This wasn't the first time the Tribe had pulled off a major late game comeback under
Julie Shackford. During her first season, 2018, the Green and Gold scored twice in the final 5:40 to beat Liberty 2-1.
Got Goals?
Saying that W&M's offense was clicking against Temple on Sunday may be an understatement. The six goals scored by the Tribe were the most in a non-conference game during
Julie Shackford's tenure at her alma mater. The last time W&M scored six-plus goals in a non-conference game was in 2008, beating Akron by the same score of 6-0. After scoring just one goal in the first two games, the Tribe has scored 11 goals during their three-game win streak.
Streaking
The three-game win streak for the Tribe is their first since 2018,
Julie Shackford's first season. With a win on Thursday the Tribe will have their first four-game win streak since they started the 2017 campaign 4-0. Sweeping both games this week would mark the first time the Tribe have won five straight since 2015. That win streak reached six games.
Familiar Colors
Julie Shackford has a very deep familiarity with Princeton, being the head coach of the Tigers from 1995-2014 before coming back to her alma mater of William & Mary in 2018. Shackford won six Ivy League titles with the Tigers and guided Princeton to eight NCAA Tournament berths.
Scouting the Spiders and Tigers
Richmond enters Thursday after being handed their first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to Delaware on Sunday. The Spiders sit at 2-1-1 on the season with wins over Longwood and Howard.
Princeton will take on Penn State before coming to Williamsburg on Sunday, but currently sit at 2-0 on their season. They have wins over Miami (Fla.) and Seton Hall so far.
History with the Spiders and Tigers
W&M has dominated their series with local rival Richmond, holding a 14-1-1 lead over the Spiders all-time. The lone Richmond win came in 2011. W&M took down the Spiders 1-0 in Richmond last season.
Sunday will be the 11
th meeting between the Tigers and Tribe, with W&M holding a 6-3-1 lead all-time. The Tigers have won the last two meetings however, with the last coming in 2019. Six of the 10 meetings between the two schools came when
Julie Shackford was head coach at Princeton.
