TRIBE NOTES
Last Time Out
Old Dominion's quick start proved to be the deciding factor in Thursday night's home opener for W&M (0-2-0, 0-0 CAA), dropping a 2-0 decision. The Monarchs scored a pair of goals in the match's first eight minutes to grab a quick lead. The Tribe was able to generate their fair share of chances throughout the game but were unable to solve the ODU backline or keeper. The Green and Gold ended up owning the shot category 15-13 by night's end with 10 of their attempts finding the frame.
Jazzy Lorenz made her first career start for the Tribe in goal and made six saves.
Shooter's Shoot
Already known as a premier offensive weapon,
Ivey Crain has quickly shown off her ability to create attacking chances for herself in 2024. The preseason All-CAA selection currently leads the nation in shots per game, while ranking fourth in shots on goal per game. She has posted eight and seven shot attempts in the first two games of the season. Thursday, against ODU, five of Crain's seven tries were on target, forcing some solid saves from the Monarch keeper. Crain finished last season top-10 in the CAA in shots per game, shots on goal per game and shot accuracy on her way to a Second Team All-CAA selection.
Not Bad, Rook
Peyton Costello's goal in the second half at Radford on Aug. 15 not only served as the Tribe's first goal of the season, but the first of her career in her collegiate debut. The freshman from Stony Brook, N.Y. took a cross from
Gabriella Kurtas in the 69
th minute and fired a sharp angle shot from the left wing that deflected off the goalie, the post, and into the back of the net. Teammate and current junior,
Ivey Crain, was the last W&M rookie to score in her collegiate debut, netting a pair of goals against Virginia Tech in 2022.
Commonwealth Combatants
Sunday's showdown in Fairfax will be the 45
th meeting all-time between George Mason and W&M. The Tribe holds a solid 24-14-6 lead in the series and won last year's match in Williamsburg 4-0. The Tribe is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings with the Patriots and 10-6 all-time in Fairfax.
Lindsay Wilson scored a pair of goals in last year's meeting earning CAA Rookie of the Week honors for the effort.
Ava Marvin scored her first career goal in last year's matchup as well.
No Need to Go Far
W&M's 2024 schedule keeps
Julie Shackford's squad close to home for most of the season, especially early on. The Tribe's first four games of the campaign are all against in-state opponents, with the nine of the first 10 contests, including the first seven, taking place in the state of Virginia. As a whole, the schedule will only require W&M to travel outside of a bordering state one time, a trip to Monmouth on Sept. 26. The rest of the Tribe's road contests will take place in North Carolina and Maryland.
