ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C.— The William & Mary men's golf team sits in seventh after the opening round of the 2024 CAA Men's Golf Championships at the Dataw Island Club.
The 54-hole event is being contested on the club's Cotton Dike Course with UNCW leading the way at 16-under. The Tribe posted a 6-over score of 294 on Sunday.
Charlie Bundy and
Preston Burton were the pacesetters for W&M in the opening round, each shooting 1-over 73, good for a tie for 24
th.
Bundy kept an extremely clean card to get the tournament under way. The sophomore started his round on the back-nine, like the rest of the William & Mary squad, and made the turn at even-par thanks to seven pars, a birdie and a bogey. Bundy added one bogey and eight pars on the front-nine to shoot 73.
Burton's round was more eventful than Bundy, but still wound up with the same score. The freshman made five birdies and an eagle his CAA Championship debut. He finished the opening round strong, making birdies on two of his last three holes.
Logan Hunter and
Scott Hanna were just one shot back of their teammates, posting 74 on Sunday and are tied for 28
th. Hunter made six birdies in on the day, tied for the sixth most in the field, while Hanna's round consisted of 14 pars, a birdie and a bogey.
Luke Walmet rounded out the lineup for the Tribe with a 76. He sits T-41 after 18 holes.
The second round of the championships begins Monday at 8:30 a.m.
