Swimming Coaches Cheer During CAA Chamionships

Scherer, 400 Medley Relay Earn Event Titles on Day Two

HAMPTON, Va. – William & Mary swimming posted some outstanding performances on the second day of CAA Championship competition at the Hampton Aquaplex, earning a pair of event championships and two podium finishes.

Ellie Scherer became the first Tribe women's swimmer to earn the CAA title in the 200 IM since 2007, swimming an astounding 1:58.96 to win the gold medal in the event.

Freshman Aiden Bond took home a silver medal in the 50 Free with a finals time of 19.79 and Lindsay Juhlin placed for a bronze medal in the 200 IM with her time of 2:01.12.

The women's team advanced 16 swimmers to finals, leading all of the women's teams in qualifiers for swimming finals as the Tribe saw to five championship finalists, five consolation finalists and six C-finalists. The men's team had nine qualifiers as two moved onto championship finals and seven earned spots in consolation heats. They also posted three times which met the NCAA B standard.
 
500 Free
Lauren Tucker earned a championship finals heat in the 500 Free as she moved on from her prelims swim of… to post a 4:57.87 time in the finals. 

Devin Genderson tied for 14th overall in the consolation finals, posting a 4:58.71 times.

Kelsey Katt and Kiersten Dagg finished second and third in their heat, having advanced to the C Finals. Katt posted a final time of 4:58.76 and Dagg touched the wall in 5:00.06.

On the men's side, Will Glass advanced to the finals for the Tribe and made a 4:31.42 time in the consolation heat.

Bryce Rouzie placed just outside a finals-qualifying swim, but he posted a personal best tine of 4:34.50 in the prelims. Freshman Ian Cullicott dropped a best time in the 500 with a 4:38.76 mark, taking over a second off his previous best.
 
200 IM
Scherer's 1:58.96 time in the 200 IM was about half of a second short of the program record time, as she posted the second-fastest swim in W&M history. The personal best time holds her ranking as second all-time in the event, but shaves over a minute from her previous mark. Her time also met the NCAA B-cut standard.

Lindsay Juhlin also cut impressive time from her previous PR mark for a bronze-medal finish in the 200 IM. Posting a 2:01.12, Juhlin jumps 12 places into the fourth all-time ranking in the event, posting the ninth-fastest finish in program history.

Sophia Heilen also earned a championship finals heat, as she posted a 2:02.20 time in the evening session, marking an 11th all-time swim. Freshman Kaitlyn Conover-Emmert broke into the top 16 all-time performer rankings at number 14 with her 2:04.20 finish in the consolation heat.

Taylor Stockard made a 2:04.97 swim to finish second in the C-final heat and Julie Addison's 2:05.63 dropped over a second from her previous personal best time. 

Five of the Tribe's men advanced to the finals in the 200 IM as fifth year Conor Sokolowsky led the pack in the championship finals. Cole Younger, David Yune, Zach LeMay and Jono Bennett each earned bids into the consolation heat. 

Sokolowsky finished fourth in the championship heat with his 1:46.59 time, which was just outside of a podium finish, but qualified for the NCAA B standard.

Younger posted a 1:48.67 finish to raise his all-time performer ranking a pair of spots to 8th in program history, while Yune swam a 1:49.57 to rank 12th all-time. LeMay finished ranked 14th all-time in program history following his 1:49.87 swim and Jono Bennett recorded a personal-best 1:50.33 time to cut nearly a second and a half from his record time.

Micah Lowe finished just a few places out of the qualifying mark but posted a best time in the 200 IM to drop over a second from his previous best with a 1:52.67 mark.
 
50 Free
In his first CAA Championship appearance, freshman Aiden Bond posted a pair of impressive 50 Free times to earn a silver medal for the Tribe. In the prelims, Bond swam a personal best 19.71, just a tenth of a second from breaking the standing freshman record in the event. Advancing to the championship final, Bond recorded another sub-20 swim, touching the wall in 19.79 to earn the first hardware of his collegiate career. His time met the NCAA B-cut standard. 

Sophomore duo Alex Valliere and Logan McDonald also advanced to the finals, moving on to the consolation heat. Valliere achieved a 20.41 mark and McDonald posted a 20.57 time to improve on his previous best 20.88 time from the WVU Invitational. 

Aaron Tingley dropped a best time in the prelim round, swimming a 21.00 and finishing just a few hundredths of a second before fellow senior Eugenio Massari's personal-best 21.03 time. Brock Rempe also made a best time, finishing in 21.24 and dropping over three tenths of a second from his best swim from last year's CAA Championships.

For the women, Caroline Burgeson led the Tribe with a championship final-qualifying time of 23.15 before posting an impressive 23.12 in the final session.

Flynn Truskett, Sarah Dunham and Zoe Arakelian all earned consolation finals spots and Meghan Rourke and Kat Vanbourgondien both advanced to the C finals. Truskett posted a 23.10 time, Dunham made a 23.32 finish and Arakelian's prelim time of 23.55 is a personal best. 

In the C finals, Meghan Rourke finished at the top of her heat with a 23.57 time and Vanbourgondien posted a 23.67 time to replace her previous personal-best from last year's CAA Championship.
 
400 Medley Relay
Ending the second day of the competition, the Tribe women's team made a championship swim in the 400 Medley as the team of Kat Vanbourgondien, Ellie Scherer, Lindsay Juhlin and Caroline Burgeson finished in 3:37.62 with the second-fastest time in program history. 

The men's relay finished in fifth place, making a 3:12.03 time by the team of Conor Sokolowsky, Brock Rempe, Kent Codding and Aiden Bond.

Up Next
Competition will once again resume at 10 a.m. on Friday with the third day of the 2024 CAA Championships. The teams will compete in the 100 Fly, 400 IM, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 200 Free Relay. Finals are slated for 6 p.m. on Friday, following the prelims.
