ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The William & Mary track and field team kicked off the 2024-25 indoor season with a bang on Saturday, as
Lauren Jones and
Austin Rice both set records in sprint events at the Navy Indoor Invitational.
The performance capped off a three-day weekend for the Tribe, which also competed in multi events at the Liberty Kickoff on Thursday and Friday. In addition to the records, W&M had four event winners and a dozen top-16 performances.
LIBERTY KICKOFF
Katriel Amoyaw competed in the women's pentathlon on day one, winning both the high jump (1.64m) and long jump (5.62m) events en route to scoring 3108 points for a second-place finish. Her result stands as 12th-best in school history.
In the men's heptathlon,
Brian Walsh narrowly missed breaking his own school record set at the CAA Indoor Championships last year, finishing with 5140 points. He placed sixth overall.
NAVY INVITE
Sprints
Jones set the record in the women's 60m dash, clocking in at 7.64 seconds to finish first. She broke the previous record held by teammate
Melissa Cunningham, who finished in 7.78 for fourth place.
Kianne Benjamin (7.79) was right behind her in fifth place.
In the men's 400m sprint, Rice shattered the program record with a time of 48:22. He finished in second place. Charlie Bestic also posted a top-16 time at 50.08.
On the women's side,
Avery Glidden ran the 400m 57.78 in for another top-16.
Two Tribe athletes posted record book performances in the women's 200m as Cunningham and Benjamin (25.17) finished in a dead heat for fifth place.
That ties as the fifth-best time in school history.
Jumps
Jones added to her impressive day with a victory in the long jump, leaping 5.80m which ranks fifth all-time.
Summer Mellow (5.62m) posted the seventh-longest jump in program history.
In the women's pole vault,
Elizabeth Strobach had the top clearance at 3.85m. Finishing behind her was
Olesya Sitkowski (3.75m), good for ninth all-time.
Sophie Fernandez cleared the bar at 3.65m for a top-16 all-time result. Distances
Kyra Holland won the women's 3000m race, finishing in 9:39.54.

W&M will have a month off before resuming action on Jan. 18 at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C.
