BURLINGTON, N.C.—The William & Mary women's golf team earned a seventh-place finish in the Elon Invitational. The 54-hole tournament was held at Alamance Country Club, with the 15 teams playing 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
The Tribe had three freshmen in their starting lineup and held their own despite their youth. Through 36 holes on Monday, W&M was 12-over (290-290) and in a tie for third place before a score of 299 in the final round dropped them to seventh. The Green and Gold's 879 total was 27-over-par.
Following the opening two rounds the Tribe was just five shots off the pace set by UNCG. Radford came from behind to win the team event at 12-over, shooting even-par 284 in the final round. UNCG and the hosts, Elon, tied for second, finishing four shots back.
Macy Johnson of Radford won the individual title, thanks to a third round 68, shooting 2-under for the event.
Samantha Skinner registered a solid performance for the Tribe in just her second career college start. The Blacksburg, Va. native opened with a 1-under-par 70, followed by a 72 to sit even-par after day one and tied for third. She shot 76 on Tuesday and finished T-14.
Mikah McDonnell matched Skinner's T-14 finish with scores of 71-72-75, totaling five-over-par 218 for the tournament.
Mary Grace Dunigan (T-22) was not far behind her teammates, finishing in the top-25 for the second time in her first two college events. She shot matching 72s on Monday before a 76 on Tuesday.
Simone Senk paced the Tribe on the last day with a 72 after a 77 and 74 on Monday. Her 10-over total earned a T-32 finish.
Ava Svindland made her first career appearance in W&M's starting lineup. The freshman shot 80-74-78, finishing in a tie for 58
th.
W&M is next in action when they go to Navy's event on Sept. 30.
