DAVIDSON, N.C. – William & Mary freshman Preston Burton posted back-to-back 1-under 69s over the final two rounds to lead the Tribe at the River Run Collegiate at the River Run Country Club.
 
Burton just missed his second-straight top-10 to start his Green and Gold career, finishing 11th at the event with a 1-over par 211. The Tribe rookie posted a tournament-best two eagles. He recorded a 2 on the par-4, 407-yard No. 1 hole in the second round after eagling the 579-yard par-5 12th hole in round one.
 
Burton finished the tournament ranked second in par-5 scoring at 6-under and seventh in par-3 scoring (-1).
 
The Tribe moved up four spots over the final two rounds to finish in a share of eighth in the 14-team field. After an opening round 296 (+16), W&M posted rounds of 285 (+5) and 287 (+7) in the second and third, respectively.
 
Junior Jake Newman carded a 220 over the event to finish in a share of 36th. He led the Tribe with eight birdies over the three days. After an opening round 79, Newman played the final two rounds in 1-over with an even par 70 on Monday and a 1-over 71 on Tuesday. He carded an eagle with a 3 on the par-5 527-yard second hole in round one.
 
Sophomore Charlie Bundy fired his best round in the final 18 on Tuesday with a 1-over 71. He totaled seven birdies during the tournament and finished in a share of 56th at 223.
 
Freshman Luke Walmet and junior Logan Hunter rounded out the Tribe lineup at the River Run Collegiate, placing 61st and 70th, respectively. Walmet started the tournament with back-to-back strong rounds, shooting 2-over 142 in the opening two rounds. He opened the tournament with an even-par 70 in round one.
 
Up Next
The Tribe returns to action at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 15-16. The event will be played at the Woodmont Country Club North in Rockville, Md.
