Men's Golf Holds Lead After First 36 Holes at Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's golf holds a six-shot lead through the opening two rounds of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate on Monday. The Tribe is the lone team under par after 36 holes behind a 4-under 564, which is the eighth-best 36-hole score in school history. 

The Tribe turned in 10 consistent rounds across its five-player lineup, ranging from 3-under 68 to 2-over 73 through the opening day of competition. Navy sits in second place at 570 (+2) followed by Villanova in third at 574 (+6). 

As a team, W&M fired a first round 6-under 278. It marked the second-best score among all teams and the best for W&M since the program moved its spring tournament to the Gold Course in 2019. The score was also the ninth-best 18th-hole mark in school history. W&M also notched the best second round score of the tournament with a 2-over 286. 

Freshmen Eli Felty and Talon Dingledine led the way for the Tribe on the opening day of competition and sit in a tie for sixth place after 1-under 141 scores. Both players were impressive in the opening round with a 3-under 68 each and followed with matching 73's (+2) in the second round. 

Sophomore Grady Williams and graduate student Matthew Monastero contributed to the Tribe's success, finishing the first 36 holes at even par 142. Monastero fired a first-round 1-under 70 behind six birdies and led the Tribe with 10 birdies over the first 36 holes. Williams eagled the 498-yard, par-5 second hole, his final hole of the day, to wrap up a career-best 1-under 70 in the second round. 

Junior Preston Burton rounded out the Tribe's top five, earning a share of 17th placed. He shot 1-over part 143, showcasing consistency with rounds of 72 (+1) and 71 (E).

The final round of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate gets underway on the Gold Course in Williamsburg with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24.
