WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis head coach
Jessica Giuggioli announced the addition of ULM transfer Alessandra Anghel to the Tribe program for the 2023-24 season. Anghel, who will be a junior next season, spent her first two collegiate seasons playing at the top of the ULM lineup.
"We are very excited to be adding Alex to the Tribe Family," Giuggioli said. "She is a talented player, and after recruiting her to come to the United States a few years ago, I look forward to finally having the opportunity to work with her in the upcoming years."
Last season, Anghel won eight singles matches and eight doubles contests for the Warhawks. She claimed six dual-match wins at the top singles position, including four in Sun Belt Conference action. She joined ULM during the spring semester in 2022 and won seven singles matches between the top two positions. Anghel has held down the top doubles post each of the last two seasons, winning 13 matches.
A native of Pistoia, Florence, Italy, Anghel won the Montencatini National Open and Torneo Open Gorinello, whiling finishing as the runner-up in the Tennis Winter Cup 2020, Torneo Open Di Livorno and Torneo Open Di Forte Dei Marmi. As a junior, she played in Serie C in Circolo Tennis Pontedera for two years.
Along with Anghel, the Tribe added a pair of graduate transfers in
Yu Chen (Jinzhang City, China/Auburn) and
Mila Mejic (Subotica, Serbia / Indiana University) as well as pair of freshmen in
Francesca Davis (Glastonbury, Somerset, England / Millfield School) and
Parker Debnam (Raleigh, N.C. / Indiana University High School) for the 2023-24 season.
The Tribe won back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Giuggioli's first two seasons in Williamsburg. W&M finished last season at 15-6, advancing to the NCAA Regional in Durham, N.C.
