WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—The William & Mary women's soccer team looks to bounce back from their first loss of the year when they welcome Hampton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The match is senior day for the Tribe, honoring 10 members of the program in a pregame ceremony.
TRIBE NOTES
Last Time Out
W&M (7-1-5, 4-1-2 CAA) finished their trip on Long Island last week dropping a 4-0 decision against Stony Brook. The Seawolves scored in the 40
th minute to take a 1-0 lead to the break before adding three insurance goals in the second half. The Tribe placed seven shots on goal but were unable to crack the code of the SBU backline.
All Good Things Come to an End
The Green and Gold's historic start was brought to a halt Sunday at Stony Brook with their first loss of the season. The Tribe's 12-game unbeaten streak shattered the previous record to start a season and was tied for the third longest unbeaten streak in program history. The 2006 squad holds the all-time record for an unbeaten streak, spanning 17 games in the middle of their season.
Setback=Bounce Back
Excluding the COVID effected spring season of 2021, the Tribe have been able to respond well to road losses followed by home games. Since 2019 W&M is 4-3-1 in home games immediately following a road loss, which is exactly the situation they find themselves in on Sunday against the Pirates. The last time the Tribe returned home after a loss was September of 2022, losing to Georgetown on the road and then beating Longwood at Martin Family Stadium.
Still the Cream of the Crop
Despite letting up four goals last Sunday, the first time they have allowed more than two all year, the Tribe still has the best goals against average in the CAA (0.692). The eight shutouts posted by the Green and Gold this year places they second in the conference in shutout percentage as well, at 61.5%.
Down the Homestretch
With the postseason nearing, the Tribe still sit comfortably inside the postseason picture, six points clear of the sixth and last spot in the CAA Tournament after Sunday's loss. The top two teams will host the quarterfinals and semifinals of the postseason, with those spots belonging to Towson and Hofstra as of midday Thursday. They both have 19 points, sitting in a tie for first in the table. Hofstra does not play Sunday, meaning, with a win Sunday, the Tribe could be as little as two points out from hosting with four games remaining in the season.
Series History
The Tribe have only played their neighbors to the South one time since Hampton recently started their women's soccer program. That match came last season on the road and resulted in a 4-0 win.
Gabriella Kurtas,
Madison Moon,
Ivey Crain and
Kayleigh Shackford all scored in the winning effort.
Scouting the Pirates
Hampton enters Sunday's match at 0-14 and 0-8 in CAA play. They have only scored three goals in conference play this season and haven't scored in six of their last seven games. Opponents are averaging over 5 goals per game against the Pirates.
