CONCORD, N.C. – Led by a pair of freshmen, William & Mary women's cross country upset regionally-ranked SEC opponent Georgia on the way to finishing third at Charlotte Opener on Friday morning at Frank Liske Park.
Freshman
Catherine Garrison earned a top-10 performance individually, covering the 5K course in 17:59.1 to finish ninth. Fellow rookie
Sofia Istnick followed in 13th at 18:34.8, while sophomore
Arianna DeBoer was just 0.5 seconds back to round out the group in the top 15 at No. 14.
As a team, the Tribe totaled 76 points to finish just 10 behind host Charlotte, who is ranked No. 8 in the Southeast Region during the preseason. The Green and Gold outdistanced Georgia, who came in at No. 12 in the South Region preseason standings. No. 14 nationally-ranked North Carolina won the event with a total of 16. The Tar Heels are also rated No. 2 in the Southeast Region.
Junior
Annie Wicker and sophomore
Lucy Young both earned top-25 finishes to round out the Tribe scorers. Wicker placed 21st in a time of 19:10.7, while Young was 23rd at 19:13.0.
The Tribe returns to action at the CNU XC Regional Preview in Newport News, Va., on Friday, Sept. 16.
