Tribe Athletics Hands Out Awards

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary Athletics recently honored a number of its student-athletes for their efforts on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
 
The department handed out its yearly President's Awards, which recognize an individual from each sport who best represents good sportsmanship, citizenship and leadership, along with the winners of prestigious Usry Award, Martha Barksdale Award and Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.
 
Martha Barksdale Award – Annie Tuttle (Women's Swimming)
The award is given to a rising senior, female student-athlete who has a GPA of 3.25 or higher and has proven to be both an outstanding student and teammate.  The nominees were selected by their coaches and voted upon by members of the athletics department senior leadership team.
 
Annie Tuttle  won the 2022 Barksdale Award.

Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship – Alfredo Bozalongo (Men's Soccer)
The scholarship is given to a rising senior student-athlete in a men's Olympic sport with a GPA of 3.25 or above.  The nominees were chosen by the coaches and voted upon by members of the athletics department senior leadership team.
 
Alfredo Bozalongo received the Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.

Robert M. Usry Award – Keaghan Schafer and Emma Wiley (Women's Gymnastics)
The Ursy award is presented to the student-athlete who has been a varsity letter winner, has completed 75% of their degree requirements, and has achieved the highest GPA of all athletes in their junior year.  
 
Keagan Schafer and Emma Wiley receive the Robert M. Usry Award.

President's Award
The award, which is voted by head coaches, recognizes ​an individual from each sport who best represents good sportsmanship, citizenship and leadership​.

W&M Athletic Foundation Female Senior Athlete of the Year Finalists
Honorees are nominated by their head coaches and the winner will be selected by a vote of the Athletics Department Senior Staff.
 
Missy Cundiff, Swimming 
- Named the CAA Swimmer of the Year
- Earned a berth in the NCAA Championships in the 50 freestyle and finished 18th, the best finish for a W&M athlete
- Set a school and CAA record swimming a 21.98 50 free at the West Virginia Invitational
- Won gold medals in the 200 medley relay and 50 free to lead W&M to the 2022 CAA Championship
 
Belle Martire, Lacrosse
- One of the most productive players in the program's history, ranking third in career goals (149) and sixth in points (182)
- Three-time All-CAA selection
- Ranked third in the CAA in points per game (3.53), tied for fourth in goals per game (2.47) and eighth in assists per game (1.07)
- A member of the Czech Republic National Team and was selected as the MVP of the 2019 European Cup
 
Cara Menges, Field Hockey 
- A three-time NFHCA All-Region, one of just seven players in program history to be named all-region on three occasions
- A two-time All-CAA First team and a three-year captain
- Ranked third nationally in 2021 with eight defensive saves
- Earned on spot on the NFHCA Senior All-Star Team
 
Mila Saric, Tennis
- Two-time CAA Player of the Year
- Selected to the NCAA Singles Championship in 2022
- Ranked sixth in W&M history in career singles winning % (71.9)
- Three-time All-CAA singles selection and two-time All-CAA doubles pick

Honorees are nominated by their head coaches and the winner will be selected by a vote of the Athletics Department Senior Staff.
 
Graham Hertweck, Swimming
- A three-event finalists at the CAA Championships
- Earned All-CAA honors in 2022, finishing third in the 50 freestyle and was sixth in the 100 butterfly
- Won CAA Championships in 2020 as part of the winning 200 and 800 freestyle relays
- Finished as the CAA silver medalist in the 100 freestyle in 2021
 
Christian Marsh, Gymnastics
- Earned multiple USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-America honors, as well as All-ECAC accolades
- Won the 2021 ECAC Championship in the rings
- Advanced to the finals at the NCAA Championships each of the last two seasons, competing on rings in 2021 and on parallel bars in 2022
- Earned All-America Scholar-Athlete distinction by the College Gymnastics Association multiple times and garnered ECAC All-Academic Team accolades
 
Matt Thomas, Baseball 
- Selected to the All-CAA First Team Selection as an outfielder in 2022
- Led the team and ranked fourth in the CAA in hits in 2022 (64)
- Ranked sixth in the league in both batting average (.318) and runs scored (41), while coming in seventh in total bases (101)
- Led all players in CAA games with a .400 batting average and 42 hits in 2022
 
Andrew Trainer, Football
- A two-time All-CAA selection who garnered first-team honors this season
- Named an All-America selection by Phil Steele
- A three-year starter at left tackle, who helped W&M lead the CAA and ranked 16th nationally with 205.5 rushing yards per game in 2021
- Signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Chargers
