Lax Continues CAA Slate at Delaware on Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team will continue its conference slate when it plays at Delaware on Saturday at 3 p.m.

A Look at the Tribe
W&M currently owns a 4-8 record and is off to a 0-2 start in conference play. The Tribe leads the Colonial Athletic Association in ground balls per game (19.2) and saves per game (11.1), while it ranks second in assists per game (5.0), draw controls per game (14.8) and caused turnovers per game (8.4). Individually, senior Belle Martire ranks second in the league in points per game (4.0), third in goals per game (2.8) and sixth in assists per game (1.1). Junior Sarah Cipolla has also come up big and ranks sixth in draw controls per game (4.4), while freshman goalie Elise Palmer leads the CAA in saves per game (10.8). Junior Caroline Donovan has played well defensively and ranks seventh in the conference in caused turnovers per game (1.1).
 
A Look at the Blue Hens
Delaware enters Saturday's game with a 3-9 record and a 0-2 mark in conference action. The Blue Hens have lost four of their last five contests and rank last in the CAA in goals per game (8.5). Riley Gillin leads the team with 31 points (12g, 19a), while Delaney McDaniel (9g, 21a) and Danika Swech (20g, 1a) have also come up big offensively. Danielle Livornese has totaled a team-high 46 draw controls.

W&M-Delaware All-Time Series
Delaware owns a 13-12 edge in the all-time series and has won the last seven of the last eight meetings.
 
Last Time vs. Delaware
W&M earned a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory against Delaware at Martin Family Stadium on April 12, 2019. After goalie Elsa Rall made a pair of saves in the opening minutes of the extra session, Belle Martire scored the game-winner with 22.9 seconds remaining on the clock. In addition to providing the game-winner, Martire finished with a team-high five goals on just seven shots. Starr Howard totaled nine draw controls, which ranked tied for the second-best single-game effort in school history at the time.  
 
Last Time Out
W&M fell to Drexel, 21-10, on Senior Day at Martin Family Stadium last weekend. Although the contest was knotted at 6-6 early in the second quarter, Drexel utilized a 10-0 run to pull ahead. Freshman Serena Jacobs led the Tribe with four goals on just five shots, while classmate Sam Van Gieson found the back of the cage on both her shots.
  
CAA Weekly Honors
Five W&M standouts have combined to garner six weekly honors from the CAA this season. Senior Lauren Russell (Feb. 14) and junior Sarah Cipolla (Feb. 28) were honored as the league's player of the week, while freshmen Serena Jacobs (Feb. 14, March 28), Ainsley Huizenga (Feb. 21) and Sam Van Gieson (March. 21) were named rookie of the week.
 
Among W&M's All-Time Best
One of the most productive attackers in school history, Belle Martire currently among the top 10 in school history in career goals (146) and points (177). She currently ranks third in goals and tied for sixth in points.
 
Starr Howard also ranks among the Tribe's best in draw controls and ranks tied for seventh all-time with 109.
 
Captains
W&M is led by a quintet of captains this season – Belle Martire, Sabrina Schrader, Grace Ahonen, Lauren Russell and Caroline Donovan. All five captains have distinguished themselves as outstanding leaders both on and off the field throughout their careers.
