STATESBORO, GA. - Having scored at least nine runs in six of nine games entering into Saturday, William & Mary had one of the most potent offenses in the nation. However, the Tribe's bats were silenced as the Tribe lost a pair of games 7-3, 6-2 Saturday afternoon to Georgia Southern.
The Tribe took an early lead in the opener, scoring in the first for the seventh time this season. Matt Thomas would lead off with a walk and David Hogarth would reach base being hit by a pitch. Jack Cone would loop a two-strike single into center to score Thomas giving the Green and Gold a 1-0 lead.
However, the lead would not last long as Georgia Southern would score three runs on a pair of hits and two wild pitches in the bottom half of the first. After four scoreless frames from Lovasz and Weidinger, Georgia Southern would score four on four hits and a pair of walks to extend the lead to 7-1 in the sixth.
The Tribe would get a pair of clean innings from Tom Mayer and make up a couple of runs in the ninth. Ben Williamson would be hit by a pitch and later score on a Max Winters single to left. Later in the frame, Cole Ragone would plate Cone on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately it would not be enough as Georgia Southern took the opener 7-3.
In game two, the teams traded scoreless frames until Georgia Southern turned on the scoreboard in the third. Two hits, an error, and a pair of free passes would lead to four runs for the Eagles in the frame. Georgia Southern extended the lead with two more runs on a pair of hits in the fourth.
The Tribe bullpen combination of Adam Fischer, Nate Knowles, and Garrett Casey would allow zero runs over the final 4.2 innings of work, allowing just two hits and striking out eight.
After a pair of scoreless frames from Fischer and Knowles, the Tribe would get on the board in the seventh. A bases-loaded hit by pitch from Phil Conti would plate Mark Trotta who walked to begin the inning. Later in the inning, a Luca Danos bases-loaded walk would score Lucas Carmichael.
Casey fired a one, two, three bottom half of the eight but it was not enough as the Tribe could not push across a runner in the ninth and Georgia Southern took game two 6-2.
Up Next: The same two teams will finish the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. before the Tribe heads to Davidson for a pair with the Wildcats.
