WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - After a full week off, William & Mary baseball will be back in action Tuesday afternoon for a midweek game at Virginia. The two teams will get together in Charlottesville for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
The Tribe (3-1) was set to play a pair of games in Cary, N.C. on Sunday that were canceled due to rain, while Virginia (7-0) is coming off a weekend sweep of Cornell. The Cavaliers bested the Green and Gold 7-6 in 12 innings in the lone matchup between the in-state rivals.
The Tribe's 3-1 start is due in large part to a patient and efficient offensive approach at the plate. This season William & Mary has drawn 30 walks in just four games, good for 13th in the nation. In addition, Tribe batters have been hit by 11 pitches, 12th in the NCAA, with
Nate Goranson and
David Hogarth each being beaned three times.
Jack Cone leads the Tribe with five walks on the year, while
Matt Thomas,
Tyler Solomon, and
Mark Trotta all have drawn a walk per game.
With 46 runs through just four games, the Tribe leads the CAA with over 11.5 runs scored per game, nearly four full runs over the next highest-scoring team. This season marks the first time since 2005 that the Tribe has scored 10 or more runs in each of the first four games of the season.
Despite playing only four games,
Ben Williamson leads the CAA with 10 runs scored and four doubles and is tied for second with a triple. Williamson also is sixth with a .421 batting average as
David Hogarth leads the league with a .556 mark. Hogarth's .636 on base percentage is second in the league, while
Jack Cone,
Matt Thomas, and Williamson all tie for fourth in the league with a .500 OBP.
William & Mary has three pitchers, Cone,
Rojo Prarie, and
Casey Green that have not surrendered an earned run in three or more innings or work.
Matt Howat has tossed 1.2 clean innings while
Carter Lovasz has allowed just one earned in a team-high 8.0 innings pitched.
