Box Score 2 WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - William & Mary baseball won a pair of wild games at Plumeri Park Saturday afternoon to complete the opening weekend sweep of Rhode Island. The Tribe took game one 15-8 in a tilt highlighted by a two-run homerun from
Matt Thomas and a grand slam from
Nate Goranson, and a 10-5 nightcap that featured an 11-out save from
Rojo Prarie.
Game One: Tribe starter
Casey Green was phenomenal striking out seven over 3.0 innings pitched and allowing zero runs and just two hits. However, the Green and Gold's offense was the story in game one.
The Tribe struck first in the opener as
Ben Williamson singled to lead-off the game and would eventually score on a
David Hogarth fielder's choice.
Matt Thomas would walk up to the plate with the bases clear and two outs and send the first pitch over the scoreboard in left field to make it 2-0 William & Mary.
With a pair of outs in the third, Thomas drew a two-out walk that would spark a Tribe rally.
Mark Trotta followed with a single and
Nate Goranson walked to load the bases.
Tyler Solomon roped a single into third to plate Thomas and Trotta to double the lead.
The lead would be short-lived as a pair of Tribe errors and timely URI hits plated six Ram runs. Jack Cucinotta and Eric Genther each had a pair of two-RBI doubles to highlight the six-run frame.
The Tribe would get a run back in bottom of the fifth as Trotta drew a lead-off walk and would come around on a
Joe Delossantos fielder's choice. Trailing by two in the sixth,
Ben Williamson led off with a double and Cone followed with a walk. Hogarth loaded the bases with an infield single and a Thomas walk would score a run.
With the bases still loaded and one out,
Nate Goranson crushed a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left for the Tribe's second grand slam in two days. The Tribe would tack on as Solomon walked and scored off a Delossantos double to make it 11-7. Two out hits from Cone, Thomas, Trotta, and Solomon would plate four more Tribe runs to make it a 15-8 ballgame.
Nate Knowles picked up his first collegiate win tossing 2.2 innings of one run ball.
Randy Prosperi provided 1.2 solid innings and
Matt Howat earned a four-out save in the win 15-8 win.
Game Two:
Ben Williamson led off game two with a double, his third straight game with a lead off hit. Cone followed with a double giving the Tribe an early lead and Hogarth would single in Cone. Thomas shot a ball off the wall in right center plating Hogarth from first in what would become a six-run Tribe first.
The teams would trade scoreless half innings until Rhode Island scored five runs on just one hit to make it a one run game in the fourth. The Tribe bullpen would settle things down as
Mike Weidinger tossed 2.0 innings allowing just one run and
Adam Fischer recorded an out before giving way to
Rojo Prarie for the final 3.2 innings.
Insurance runs would come in the eighth as
Tyler Solomon came around on a bases loaded fielder's choice off the bat from Williamson. Later with the bases still juiced, Hogarth shot a pitch up the middle to plate a pair and Cone would come around on a Thomas single to left making it a 10-5 game.
Prairie retired the Rams in order in the ninth to earn the 11-out save and ensure the sweep.
