Things to Know

- The Tribe opens CAA play on the road for the fifth-straight season. It marks the second year in a row and third time in the last four that W&M travels to Charleston to kick off the season. Last season, the Tribe and Cougars played to a 0-0 draw in Charleston. Since 1993, the Tribe is 20-6-2 in CAA openers.

- The Green and Gold is 4-1-3 against Charleston with all eight meetings coming since the Cougars joined the CAA in 2013. The teams played to a scoreless draw last season. Previously, W&M topped CofC, 1-0, in Williamsburg on a late goal in 2019. CofC's lone win came in 2018 in Charleston, 2-1.

- Charleston enters the CAA opener for both teams at 1-6-2 on the year. The Cougars lone win came at Appalachian State, 2-0, on Sept. 2. CofC owns 1-1 draws with Georgia South (Aug. 19) and in its most recent contest with Jacksonville (Sept. 19) at home. Forwards Delaney Dawes and Grace Powell and midfielder Natalie Sgro lead the Cougars with two goal apiece.

- Most recently, the Tribe suffered a setback to No. 12-ranked Georgetown, 6-0, on Sept. 18. Prior to that contest, the Tribe picked up a thrilling 1-0 win over East Carolina on Sept. 12. Junior Kayleigh Shackford scored the game's only goal in the 17th minute, firing a beautiful shot upper 90 from 25 yards out.

- In the win over the Pirates, W&M posted its first clean sheet of the season. Sophomore Grace Lemley played a spotless first half making a save before freshman Morgan Wood made her collegiate debut and stopped five shots in the final 45 minutes, including two from close range. Lemley and Wood split time against the Hoyas as well with Wood earning her first collegiate start.

- Shackford leads the Tribe and ranks 11th in the CAA in goals with two. Along with her game-winner vs. ECU, she converted a penalty kick in the Tribe's season-opening win at American.

- The Tribe roster consists mainly of freshmen and sophomores with 18 of the 30 student-athletes coming from those two classes. In total 15 of those 18 have seen game action in 2021, including nine that have earned starts. In total, eight of W&M's 10 freshmen have seen action.

- W&M alumna Kathy Carter '91 was recently elevated to chief executive of the Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. She previously served as the Chief Revenue Officer of LA28 since 2018. Carter, who earned her degree in government, was a standout goalie for the Tribe from 1987-90 and still holds the school record of a 0.78 goals-against-average.

- The Tribe has enjoyed great success in the classroom recently. As a team, W&M sports a 3.53 cumulative GPA, following a 3.6 semester in the spring. In total, 30 W&M student-athletes earned CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll distinction last year and 23 received W&M Provost Award honors with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

- Tribe alum and two-time World Cup winner Jill Ellis '88 was named the president of the latest National Women's Soccer League expansion team in San Diego in June. The team will start play in NWSL beginning in the Spring of 2022.
