Men's Golf Shoots Second-Best 18-Hole, 36-Hole Marks in W&M History on Day 1 of VCU Shootout

RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary men's golf fired the second-best round in school history thanks to a 10-under par 278 and sit in third place after two rounds at the VCU Shootout, played at the Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek Course. The Tribe 10-under 566 through two rounds is also the second-best 36-hole score in program history.

Highlighting the scorching second-round was a pair of newcomers to the Tribe in graduate transfer Ethan Mangum and freshman Logan Hunter. After struggling in the opening round, Mangum fired the second-best round of the tournament in the second. He shot a 5-under 67, which tied for the ninth-best round in school history and the best since 2018.

Following an opening-round even-par 72 in his first collegiate action, Hunter shot a 4-under par 68 in round two. It was the best round for a W&M freshman since Will Stewart shot 4-under 67 at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in 2015. Hunter attacked the par 5s, shooting 4-under over the opening two rounds, which ranks fourth at the event. He sits in a tie for seventh through two rounds at 140.

Junior Jimmy Taylor followed a 2-under par 70 in the opening round with an even-par 72 in round two. He is tied for 18th at 142.

After shooting 72 in the opening round, sophomore Will Rieck tied his collegiate-best round of 1-under par 71 in round two. He gave the Tribe three players among the top 25, sitting in a tie for 23rd at 143.

Junior Trevor Binau posted back-to-back 74s to round out the Tribe lineup and sits in a tie for 46th at 148. In his opening round, Binau was one of two players to eagle the par-5 524-yard fifth hole.

As a team, the Tribe is eight shots behind leader Richmond, who shot an 18-under par 558. VCU is second at 565 (-11). The Tribe's 10-under 278 in round two was the second-best in school history behind only a 13-under 275 in the opening round at the Loyola Intercollegiate in 2016. The Tribe 566 through two rounds is also the second-best 36-hold mark in school history behind only a 13-under 563 at The Invitational at Savannah Harbor in 2018.

W&M wraps up the VCU Shootout on Tuesday, which opens with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
