WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary head men's soccer coach
Chris Norris announced the addition of graduate transfer
Matt Thorsheim to the Tribe roster for the 2021 season. Thorsheim is a four-time All-Patriot League selection in the midfield at Bucknell and will enroll in W&M's prestigious Raymond A. Mason School of Business to pursue an MBA.
"We are really excited for Matt to join us," Norris said. "Matt had an outstanding career at Bucknell, distinguishing himself on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. His ability, experience, leadership and character will enable Matt to adapt quickly and become a vital member of our Tribe family."
Each of the last two seasons, Thorsheim was named the All-Patriot League First Team and was honored as the conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This past season, he was a Third Team Academic All-American.
Over his career, he played in 57 games with 56 starts and totaled 14 goals and 12 assists for 40 points. Thorsheim posted his best statistical season with a team-high seven goals and five assists in 2019.
Thorsheim was twice selected to United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team in 2017 and 2019. Along with All-Patriot League Third Team honors in 2017, he was a
College Soccer News Freshman All-American after leading Bucknell with 14 points on five goals and four assists. Thorsheim was an All-Patriot League Second Team selection in 2018.
Thorsheim earned his degree at Bucknell in finance and Spanish. He was the recipient of Lee S "Bud" Ranck Award for outstanding spirit and contributions to the Bucknell athletic program. Last spring, he was a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes senior student-athletes in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Tribe returns 10 of its 11 starters and all of its scoring (goals, assists and points) from last spring's 2-4 campaign. Included in its group of returners are four All-CAA players in juniors
Alexander Levengood (first team),
Alfredo Bozalongo (second team) and
Marcos Villeda (third team) and sophomore
Joe Core (third team), who was ranked as one of the top freshmen in the country by Top Drawer Soccer in the spring.
W&M opens the season with a scrimmage at American on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 4 p.m. The Tribe kicks off the regular season on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Old Dominion. The Green and Gold's first home match of 2021 is slated for Friday, Sept. 10, vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) at 5 p.m.
