Box Score 2 WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – William & Mary baseball dropped a pair of CAA contests to the College of Charleston 10-1, and 5-4 Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. The two games were the final two home dates for the Tribe this season.
The Cougars led wire to wire taking the lead and never giving it back in the opening game. The game was tight through six innings, but three runs in the seventh and another four in the eighth boosted Charleston to the 10-1 win.
Game two was a close affair that saw both teams enjoy leads, but crooked numbers by Charleston in the fifth and the eighth gave the visitors a 5-4 win and series sweep.
Charleston's momentum from Friday's big ninth inning flowed into Saturday as the Cougars scored twice in the opening frame of game one. With men on second and third and two outs, Landon Choboy shot a single into left scoring Joseph Mershon. Ari Sechopoulos followed with a single to right to plate Harrison Hawkins and give Charleston a 2-0 lead.
Pearson would settle in and retire the Cougars without trouble four the next five frames, however he was matched pitch for pitch by Charleston starter Trey Pooser. The Tribe's first offensive threat came in the fifth inning as Tyler Solomon and David Hogarth laced a pair of singles into the outfield, but Pooser was able to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
After Pearson allowed a lead off single in the seventh, Ben Greenspon entered for the Tribe. The Cougars jumped on the William & Mary reliever as Hawkins hit a two-run homer into left center. The road team would plate another run on a pair of hits making it 5-0 Charleston.
Matt Thomas hit a lead off single into left and Solomon walked to start the Tribe half of the seventh, but Pooser was able to retire the next three men to neutralize the threat and preserve the 5-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth, College of Charleston would break the game open scoring four runs on three hits, one walk, and one hit batter to make it 9-0 visitors. In the bottom half, Joe Delossantos would break up the shutout sending a solo shot into the parking lot in right field. The Cougars tacked on a run in the ninth to make it a 10-1 final.
College of Charleston looked to keep the bats going in the second game as the Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first, but starter Zach Tsakounis settled in striking out a man and forcing a fly to center field escaping the jam.
Tsakounis would navigate traffic again in the second inning before firing off a one, two, three third with a pair of strikeouts. The Green and Gold got a lead off single from Ben Williamson and a pair of walks in the third but could not plate a runner as the game remained scoreless.
After another one, two, three inning from Tsakounis, the Tribe would break through for the team's first lead of the day. Hogarth and Hunter Hart would lead off with singles and each move an extra ninety feet on a sac bunt from Mark Trotta. Delossantos would hit a sharp grounder to short to score Hogarth and make it 1-0 William & Mary.
The lead would not last long as Charleston got to Tsakounis in the top half of the fifth. With one out Joseph Mershon reached on an infield chopper and scored on Hunter Harlan's triple. Harrison Hawkins would follow with a home run to left making it 3-1 Cougars.
Matt Thomas smoked his second double of the game to deep left center with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Solomon rocked a single up the middle to plate Thomas and would move to third as Nate Goranson reached on an error by the Charleston right fielder but a pair of nice plays by the Cougars stifled the Tribe rally.
Tsakounis would set the Cougars down in order in his sixth and final inning of work, giving way to Randy Prosper in the seventh. Prosperi worked a scoreless frame to keep the Tribe within one.
A pair of seniors would combine to tie the score for the Tribe in the seventh. Matt McDermott roped a single into left to lead off the inning and would score from first on Solomon's double down the right field line evening the ball game at 3-3.
Charleston regained the lead in the top of the eighth behind a two out rally. With a pair down the Cougars rattled off a couple of hits and benefited from a Tribe error to score twice making it a 5-3 game.
The Tribe answered with a two out rally of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Senior Matt Trehub sent a pinch hit single through the left side before being replaced on the bases by Ryan McKenna. Ben Williamson would be hit by a pitch forcing McKenna up and the pinch runner scored on McDermott's single up the middle making it a 5-4 game, but the Tribe would leave men on first and second to end the inning.
Matt Howat downed the Cougars easily in the ninth, but Ty Good retired the Tribe in order to preserve Charleston's 5-4 win. Good earned the win tossing 4.2 innings in relief and Howat took the loss allowing one earned run in 2.0 innings of work.
The Tribe will finish the regular season next weekend in Harrisonburg with a three game set with James Madison.
