Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – The Tribe surrendered six runs in the first inning and three more in the fourth as the big inning bit the road team in an 11-6 loss at Duke Tuesday night. The Green and Gold scored in five innings and smacked eight hits but could not overcome four Duke homers in the loss.
Matt McDdermott,
Cole Ragone, and
Nate Goranson would each swat a pair of hits for the Tribe and
Matt Thomas,
Mark Trotta, and
Tyler Solomon would each draw walks and score in the game.
On the hill,
Rojo Prarie and
Adam Fischer would work scoreless second and third innings respectively both allowing just one hit.
Brody Mack and
Randy Prosperi combined to work a clean sixth and
Tom Mayer would allow just one holding the Blue Devils to zero runs in the game's final two frames.
Jacob Haney took the loss as the Tribe sent nine pitchers to the hill in a scheduled staff day.
Duke wasted no time getting on the board in the top half of the first inning as Ethan Murray doubled and came into score on a one-out two-run homer by Rj Schrek. After the inning was extended by an error, Chris Crabtree went deep for the seventh time this season to extend the Blue Devils' lead in the opening frame. Later in the first, a two-run single by Graham Pauley would punctuate the six-run first.
The Tribe cut into the lead in the top half of the second as Thomas and Solomon would reach base after being hit by pitches and a Ragone single would load the bases.
David Hogarth would plate Thomas on a fielder's choice and Goranson's RBI single scored Solomon making it a 6-2 game.
William & Mary would score again in the fourth to further chip away at the Blue Devil's lead. With two outs, Hogarth would walk and move to third on Goranson's second hit of the game. The Tribe second baseman would come in to score on a passed ball making it a 6-3 game.
The Blue Devils would strike back in the home half of the fourth using a pair of hits and two walks to plate three runs. The three-run fourth was highlighted by a two-run single from Erikson Nichols to make it 9-3 Duke.
McDermott would manufacture a run in the fifth as the shortstop knocked a one-out single into left, stole second, and would advance to third and score on a pair of wild pitches. Duke added two runs on a pair of homers in the fifth to make it 11-4.
In the seventh, the Tribe would force three walks off the Duke pitching staff, but W&M could only muster one run as Trotta scored on a one-out sac fly off the bat of Ragone. An inning later,
Hunter Hart led off with a triple to right and scored on
Ben Williamson's ground out.
Tom Mayer would keep Duke off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings, but W&M would not be able to push any more runs across as the Blue Devils took the 11-6 decision.
The Tribe will return home to Plumeri Park this weekend for a three-game set with the College of Charleston. The Green and Gold will host the Cougars Friday night before Saturday's doubleheader ends the home portion of the schedule.
