William & Mary Seeded No. 3 in the CAA Women’s Tennis Championship

RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary will be the No. 3 seed and host the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 22, through Sunday, April 25, in Williamsburg at the Millie West Tennis Facility.

The Tribe is the No. 3 seed for the third time and first since 2014. W&M opens the competition against No. 6 UNCW on Friday, April 23, in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. All matches of the 2021 CAA Championship will be played at the Millie West Tennis Facility. In the event of inclement weather, the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center will be used as a back-up indoor site.

W&M enters the CAA Championship having won two in a row and sits at 5-8 on the year. Most recently, the Tribe turned in its strongest performance of the year, upending A-10 favorite VCU, 4-1, at the Millie West Tennis Facility on April 14.

The Tribe has a long history of dominating CAA competition, and more importantly the CAA Championship. The Tribe has won 26 of the CAA's 35 all-time women's tennis championships and finished as the runner up on six other occasions.

Since the league adopted its current, head-to-head team format for the CAA Championship in 1995, the Green and Gold is 61-8 (.884) at the event. Overall since the first season of CAA tennis, the Tribe is 144-21 (.873) all-time versus league opponents. In matches with current CAA teams, the Tribe is 88-7 (.926) all-time and 67-6 (.918) with those teams as members of the league.

JMU is the top seed in the CAA Championship followed by No. 2 Elon. After the Tribe, the seeding includes No. 4 Charleston, No. 5 Delaware, No. 6 UNCW, No. 7 Drexel, No. 8 Towson and No. 9 Hofstra. The Tigers and Pride open the championship in the first round on Thursday, April 22, at 11 a.m. The winner faces the top-seeded Dukes at noon on Friday. Charleston and Delaware start quarterfinal action at 9 a.m. on Friday. Elon and Drexel square off a 3 p.m. in the third quarterfinal with the Tribe and Seahawks to follow.

The semifinals of the CAA Championship are set for Saturday, April 24, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The title match is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 25.

The 2021 CAA Tennis Championship will be closed to the general public. No spectators will be admitted on Thursday or Friday of the event. The semifinals on Saturday and championship on Sunday will be limited to team and player pass lists to keep the Millie West Tennis Facility within the limits of COVID-19 capacity. If matches are moved indoors due to inclement weather, the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center will be closed to all spectators.
