The William & Mary men's track & field team picked up four wins Sunday at the George Mason Spring Invitational, including in a pair of throws as well as a sprint and a middle-distance race. The Tribe also had six new entries in the all-time record books.
Leading the way as he has all season long was grad student
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.), who won the 400m dash in 48.21 seconds, just off his lifetime-best. That was still good enough to be the sixth-fastest race ever at W&M. Also in the event, redshirt-freshman
Jack Bunting (Summit, N.J.) ran a personal-best 49.79 for fourth overall. Redshirt-freshman
Jared O'Riley (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) kept his hot streak going in the javelin, winning for the third week in a row, and setting a lifetime-best with a throw of 64.89m (212-11). That improved him to seventh all-time at W&M. Freshman
Chris Arias (Red Bank, N.J.) was third in the javelin, throwing for 59.46m (195-1).
Also in the throws, All-American
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) won the hammer with a throw of 61.34m (201-3). His classmate
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) was third overall with a lifetime-best throw of 57.02m (187-1), improving to eighth all-time at W&M in the event. Cook was also fifth overall in the discus, throwing for 48.09m (157-9). The Tribe's fourth win came in the 800m, where freshman
Josh Lewin (West Chester, Va.) ran a personal-best 1:50.48 to rank 16th all-time among Tribe athletes. Redshirt-junior
Colin Grip (Acton, Mass.) was close behind in 1:52.01, finishing sixth overall.
In the 100m dash, both of W&M's entries ran personal-best times. Freshman
Jackson Cooley (Reston, Va.) was sixth in 10.94 seconds, shaving .01 off the time he ran two weeks ago and improving to a tie for 10th all-time among Tribe athletes. Grad student
Matt Chabala (San Ramon, Calif.) improved his lifetime-best by a full tenth, running 11.05 seconds for 10th overall. That moved Chabala up to 15th all-time in school history. The evening session of the meet featured the distance races, including the 3,000m steeplechase where redshirt-junior
Matt Frame (Alexandria, Va.) ran 9:47.59 for third overall, and
Zach Skolnekovich (Sewickley, Pa.) was 10:30.42 for seventh in his first attempt at the event. In the 5,000m,
Joshua Shackelford (Hayes, Va.) was sixth in 14:59.65, and
Jack Mackey (Alexandria, Va.) ran 15:02.32 for eighth overall.
William & Mary is back in action next weekend, competing on Friday and Saturday April 16-17 at the UVA Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. The Tribe is also slated to compete at the JMU Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va., on Saturday.
