W&M Men Ninth as Play Halted Due to Darkness at Ross Collegiate Classic

The William & Mary men's golf team bounced back from a tough opening round to the season on Monday, and stands ninth overall partway through the second round at the Donald Ross Collegiate Classic in Southern Pines, N.C.  With teams all over the course between barely started and almost finished, play was suspended on Monday night, and will be resumed on Tuesday morning before the third and final round.  UNC Greensboro currently leads the 13-team field at 6-over, two strokes ahead of Loyola (Md.), thanks to three players among the top five in scoring.  Florida A&M's Ethan Mangus has a one-stroke advantage in individual play for the night.

Live Leaderboard

The Tribe, competing for the first time in more than a full year, opened with a tough 307 (+19) on Monday morning, but recovered very well and was merely +5 in the second round, with between two and three holes left for all players.  Junior Matthew Feinstein (McLean, Va.) and sophomore Jimmy Taylor (Alexandria, Va.) are both tied for 12th overall at 2-over for the tournament, Feinstein after opening with a 73 (+1) and Taylor with a two-over 72.  Grad transfer Preston Ball (Raleigh, N.C.) is 1-over for the second round and surging up the leaderboard in a tie for 27th after opening his Tribe career with a 77 in the morning.  Sophomore Trevor Binau (Columbus, Ohio) is also making a big improvement in the second round, bouncing back from a first-round 83 to shoot merely 3-over with three holes to go, and is tied for 64th in the field.  Junior Jack Grier (Chicago, Ill.) rounds out the team in 82nd overall, and is six shots better in the second round than he was in the first.

Action begins on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. as teams finish their second round and roll right into the third.
