W&M Men's Golf Heads to Mid Pines for Ross Collegiate Classic

The William & Mary men's golf team begins its 2021 spring campaign this weekend, at the Donald Ross Collegiate Classic on Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9.  Teams will tee-off for 36-holes of action on Monday starting at 7:30 a.m. on the Mid Pines Golf Club (par 72, 6,633 yards) in Southern Pines, N.C., and begin the third and final round Tuesday morning starting at 8 a.m.

In addition to the Tribe, playing for the first time under the direction of interim head coach Tim Pemberton '05, the tournament will include host George Mason, Richmond, Elon, Florida A&M, Ohio, Loyola (Md.), George Washington, St. Bonaventure, St. John's, UNC Greensboro, Seton Hall, and Villanova.

W&M's line-up will include five veteran players, led by 1L grad transfer Preston Ball (Raleigh, N.C.).  A transfer from Loyola (Md.) who is enrolled in law school at W&M, Ball improved consistently all four years for the Greyhounds.  As a freshman, he averaged 77.58, and dropped that every year to shoot 72.88 last year in six events before CoVID-19 cancelled the spring season and granted him an extra year of eligibility, which both Ball and the Tribe look to use to full effect this spring.  Sophomore Jimmy Taylor (Alexandria, Va.) ranked second for W&M in scoring as a true freshman in 2019-20, averaging 73.89 strokes in 18 rounds, five of them coming in at par or better.  That was also the second-lowest average ever recorded by a Tribe rookie.

Taylor's classmate Trevor Binau (Columbus, Ohio) only appeared in one tournament last year, playing as an individual at Savannah and averaging 75 strokes per round to finish middle of the table.  Junior Matthew Feinstein (McLean, Va.) appeared in all but one tournament in 2019-20, averaging 76 strokes per round with his best round coming at Marshall, when he shot 69 (-2).  His classmate Jack Grier (Chicago, Ill.) will be making his first appearance in the scoring line-up, but was all-conference in golf as a senior in high school after average 74.2 strokes per round and taking 14th at the Illinois state championships.
