Men's Golf Fifth After First Day at Golden Horseshoe

The William & Mary men's golf team had a solid opening day at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate Monday, shooting 291-292 to finish 583 (+23) and stand fifth in the clubhouse.  VCU leads the 16-team field by three strokes at 574 (+3), with Old Dominion close behind at 577 (+17).  The Monarchs' Jakob Heriksson is leading the individual field, carding a 138 (-2) through two rounds.

For W&M, grad student Preston Ball (Raleigh, N.C.) is leading the way in a tie for sixth overall after rounds of 72-71 (143, +3).  Sophomore Trevor Binau (Columbus, Ohio) is tied for 12th overall at 144 (+4), and junior Matthew Feinstein (McLean, Va.) is tied for 26th after rounds of 70 (E) and 77.  The scoring lineup also includes freshman Matt Epstein (Hopkinton, Mass.), who improved six strokes between rounds to shoot 78-72 (+10) and stand tied for 43rd, while sophomore Jimmy Taylor (Alexandria, Va.) is tied for 58th at 154 (+14).  W&M also has three players playing as individuals, including freshman Will Rieck (Franklin, Tenn.), tied for 37th after shooting 77-72, as well as grad student Garrett deFisser (Gilbert, Ariz.), who recovered from a morning 84 to shoot 79 (+9) and improve to a tie for 80th overall.  Junior Jack Grier (Chicago, Ill.) completes the Tribe roster in 85th overall, after closing with a career-low 74 (+4) in the second round.

The third and final round of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate wraps up Tuesday morning, beginning at 9 a.m.
