The William & Mary women's swimming team wrapped up a historic 2020-21 regular season on Saturday, downing Old Dominion on the road, 181-81, to complete the first undefeated season in 50 years. The Tribe improved to 4-0 with the win, its first perfect record since the 1970-71 team recorded wins over ODU, VCU, East Carolina, Roanoke, and JMU before steamrolling its way to the state championship. W&M wraps up the regular season at 4-0, while the Lady Monarchs fell to 1-1 overall.
En route to the win, the Tribe won 11 of the 14 events and set six lifetime-bests, in addition to five dual-meet records and another NCAA provisional qualifier. The winning started in the 200 medley relay, where the team of
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.),
Annie Tuttle (Alexandria, Va.),
Corinne Davenport (Elon, N.C.), and
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) swam 1:42.42 to break the dual meet record that the same quartet set a week ago at 1:42.65. It was also the 12th-fastest single race in school history. Next up was the 1,000 free, where senior
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) won her 50th career race in 10:08.45, and broke her own dual-meet record of 10:10.97 set two seasons ago. Bull's time was also the seventh-fastest race ever swum by W&M.
In the 200 free, sophomore
Elizabeth Intihar (Columbus, Ohio) got her remarkable day underway with the first of two wins and two dual-meet records. She won the event in 1:50.20, a lifetime-best to improve to 11th all-time among Tribe athletes, and the fastest time in the league this season. Intihar's time also smashed the dual-meet record of 1:50.99 held by all-time great
Katie Radloff '10 since 2010. Her classmate
Katie Stevenson (Wilton, Conn.) was also under Radloff's record, timing 1:50.26 for second place.
W&M's wins kept coming in the next five events, with freshman
Kat Vanbourgondien (Virginia Beach, Va.) taking the 100 back in 56.67 seconds, and the sophomore Tuttle winning the 100 breast for the third time in four tries this season with a time of 1:03.72. Senior
Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.) won the 200 fly in 2:06.72, and Cundiff remained untouchable in the 50 free, winning the event and swimming yet another NCAA provisional qualifier in 22.71 seconds. Stevenson came back to finish off the string with her team-best sixth win of the season, taking the 100 free in 51.01 seconds.
After ODU took the wins in the 200 back and 200 breast, Intihar returned to the pool in the 500 free, and torched the course in 4:54.65 for her second win of the day. That also broke the dual-meet record set just last week by her teammate Bull. The junior Cundiff won her second event in the 100 fly, timing 56.87, before joining with Stevenson, Kenna, and Bull to win the 400 free relay in 3:24.90. That demolished the previous dual-meet record of 3:28.30 set back in November of 2017 by a team that included then-freshmen Bull and
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.).
With the regular season complete, William & Mary now turns its attention to the CAA Championships, which will be held March 29-April 2 at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center.
