The William & Mary swimming teams will hop the bus for a short trip to Norfolk, Va., on Saturday to take on Old Dominion in the regular season finale. Action at Chandler Pool will begin at 10 a.m. for the men, with the women following at 2 p.m. The meet is closed to spectators due to CoVID-19 regulations at ODU.
Originally founded as an extension of W&M in 1930, Old Dominion became an independent institution in 1962, but the ties between the schools remain deep. Joseph "Scrap" Chandler was a baseball and track star at W&M before graduating in 1924, and was immediately hired as a coach for the Tribe upon graduation and coached cross country, track, and swimming. In 1942, he moved down to the "Norfolk Division" as athletic director and coach, roles he continued until retiring in 1968. Part of Chandler's legacy was a nationally-recognized community swimming program and recognition among college coaches as a national authority in coaching both track and swimming. The pool at Old Dominion is named in his honor, and Chandler is in the Hall of Fame at both universities.
