RICHMOND, Va. – A quartet of William & Mary men's soccer players earned honors from the Colonial Athletic Association on Wednesday as the league announced its end of the year awards. Junior
Alexander Levengood highlighted the group earning All-CAA First Team distinction for the second year in a row, while fellow classmates
Diba Nwegbo and
Nathan Messer were named to the second team. Redshirt freshman
Jack Crocco rounded out the group as a member of the All-Rookie Team.
Levengood earned a spot on the top team after a season in which he was one of the top scorers in the league. The junior midfielder scored six of his seven goals in league play, which tied for the CAA lead. He tallied 14 total points in conference action, adding two assists.
Overall, Levengood ranked third in the league in game-winning goals (3), fourth in goals (7) and goals per game (0.5) and fifth in points per game (1.21). Nationally, he is 38th in game-winning goals, 49th in goals per game and 62nd in points per game. Levengood tallied a brace in the Tribe's win at Delaware and added goals against Northeastern, Charleston, JMU and Elon.
Nwegbo and Messer each earned their first All-CAA awards as members of the second team. Both players finished the year with 12 points on four goals and four assists. They also ranked 10th in the CAA in points per game (0.86).
Nwegbo tallied the fastest goal in CAA history at Hofstra, scoring 12 seconds into the game. He also found the back of the net against Saint Francis, Virginia Tech and Drexel. His marker against the Dragons was his first career game-winner.
Messer moved from the midfield to the backline as the Tribe transitioned formations during the season. Three of his four goals in 2021 were game-winners, which ranked third in the CAA and 38th nationally. His marker in the 55th minute at NC State led the Tribe to a 1-0 upset of the ACC foe. Messer's three assists in CAA play ranked 10th in the league.
Crocco appeared in 13 matches during his rookie season and started his final five games. As the Tribe converted to a 5-3-2, the Midlothian, Va., native moved into the starting lineup along the backline and helped the Tribe win four of its final five matches. He finished the year with 636 minutes played and helped the Tribe to back-to-back shutout wins over Drexel and NC State.
