WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary head men's tennis coach
Jeff Kader announced the Tribe's 2021-22 schedule on Wednesday. The Tribe will play in three fall events and have 14 of its 18 spring matches at home.
During the fall, the Tribe travels to Richmond, Va., on Oct. 8-10 to take part in the Richmond Spiders Invitational. W&M competed in the event in both 2018 and 2019.
This season, the ITA Atlantic Region will be divided into two weekends. The qualifying weekend will be held at Liberty, Oct. 14-17, while the super regional and championship rounds are set for Oct. 23-25 at Old Dominion. The top 16 players in the region automatically qualify for the super regional.
During the spring, the Tribe will face off with at least eight teams that finished last season in the ITA National Rankings.
W&M opens on the road at No. 39 Liberty on Jan. 22, before traveling to Baylor to take part in the ITA Kickoff weekend for the third time in the 13-year history of the event. The Tribe opens with national runner-up and host Baylor on Jan. 30. W&M will meet either No. 43 Miami (Fla.) or No. 55 Clemson on Jan. 31.
Following the opening three matches away from home, W&M kicks off a 14-match homestand during the month of February. Five of the Tribe's seven opponents in February are from the state of Virginia, beginning with Longwood on Feb. 4. W&M also hosts Radford (Feb. 13), Old Dominion (Feb. 16), who finished last year ranked No. 53 nationally, Richmond (Feb. 18) and CAA foe James Madison (Feb. 26) as well.
The Tribe also hosts Elon in its first CAA match of the season on Feb. 6. The teams played a classic 4-3 match in the CAA Semifinals last spring with the Green and Gold pulling out the win. The Phoenix was ranked No. 68 nationally at the end of last season. W&M wraps up the month of February at home against Ivy League foe Brown on Feb. 27.
W&M hosts five matches at home during the month of March, beginning with No. 74 Navy on March 12. The following day, the Green and Gold welcomes Temple to Williamsburg.
The Tribe faces UAB and Penn on March 19 and 20, respectively. It will be the seventh meeting between W&M and Penn in the last eight years. The Tribe hosts UAB for just the second time, and first since 1999. W&M wraps up the month of March with its third CAA match of the year on March 22 against Drexel.
William & Mary closes out the homestand against UTSA and VCU on April 2 and 6. W&M and UTSA meet for the fourth time and first since 2016. The Tribe and former CAA rival VCU meet for the 40th time. The Rams finished last season ranked No. 38 nationally.
The Tribe wraps up the regular season with a road trip to Old Dominion for the teams second meeting of the year on April 16. Last season, W&M and ODU split matches with the Tribe posting a 4-3 win in Williamsburg.
The 2022 CAA Men's Tennis Championship is set for April 22-24 at Elon. Last year, W&M advanced to the title match for the second time in the last four years before falling to UNCW.
