Golden Weekend is Saturday and Sunday; Marcus Thornton Jersey Retirement Set for Gold Rush

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – It's the week to join the Rush to Kaplan! The Golden Weekend features the annual Gold Rush and Golden Games for men's and women's basketball, Feb. 15-16. A special for the Golden Weekend, William & Mary Athletics will retire the jersey of former All-American Marcus Thornton '15 at halftime of Saturday's men's game.
 
The exciting weekend of Tribe hoops starts with the men's sixth annual Gold Rush Game against Delaware on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. Women's basketball hosts Hofstra for its fourth annual Golden Game on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. Fans are asked to wear GOLD and help us #PaktheKap! With a large crowd expected for Gold Rush, know the best place to park on campus.
 
The first 1,250 fans in attendance at the men's game will receive a free gold t-shirt courtesy of Wren Traditions! Fans in the lower bowl will receive a pom-pom to help cheer on the Tribe. The first 250 fans to Sunday's women's game will receive a free gold t-shirt and a pom-pom.
 
Be part of the action by getting your #WMGoldRush tickets today. For a special price of $15 fans can purchase the Golden Ticket Package and attend both games. The package includes a mezzanine ticket to the men's Gold Rush Game and a general admission ticket to the women's Golden Game.

Also at halftime on Saturday, the Tribe will honor one of its all-time greats by retiring Marcus Thornton's No. 3 jersey retired and placing it in the rafters. Thornton is the sixth Tribe player to have his number retired joining Keith Cieplicki (#14), Bill Chambers (#32), Chet Giermak (#32), John Lowenhaupt (#42) and Jeff Cohen (#52). He is W&M's all-time leading scorer and became the first Tribe player to be named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year in 2015.

 Thornton was the 45th pick overall in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. He has spent time professionally with the Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers as well as Canton Charge and Maine Red Claws in the NBA G-League. Thornton played for Team USA in 2018 and his professional career has included stops in Australia, Italy, China, Turkey and South Korea.
