Bryce Barnes, Tyler Hamilton Join William & Mary Men’s Basketball as Graduate Transfers

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary head coach Dane Fischer announced the addition of two graduate transfers in 5-11 guard Bryce Barnes (Chicago, Ill./Brogan Prep/Milwaukee) and 6-4 guard Tyler Hamilton (Atlanta, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian/Cheshire Academy/Penn) to the Tribe men's basketball program. Both student-athletes will be immediately eligible for the 2019-20 season and enroll in the MBA program at William & Mary's prestigious Raymond A. Mason School of Business.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Bryce and Tyler to the William & Mary Basketball Program," Fischer said. "Both of these young men bring tremendous experience and leadership and will be relied upon heavily in both of those areas. In addition to being accomplished college basketball players, they are both fantastic students and young men that will represent our program the right way on and off the court."

Bryce Barnes

Barnes started 41 games over the last two seasons and appeared in 92 over his three-year career at Milwaukee. He averaged 5.5 points per game (506 total points) to go along with 1.7 assists and 1.6 rebounds per contest in his career. Barnes earned his undergraduate degree at Milwaukee in marketing in just three years.

"Bryce has been a starting point guard at the Division I level and brings great intangibles to our team," Fischer said. "He can create for others, knock down open shots and has the ability to defend at a high level.  Bryce will also bring a veteran presence to our program which will be incredibly important this season."

Barnes started 26 of 32 games as a sophomore in 2017-18 and averaged a career-high 6.5 points per game. This past season, he averaged 6.1 points per game, while leading the Panthers in assists with 68 (2.7 per contest). Barnes was a 34 percent 3-point shooter over his career at Milwaukee and ranked second on the team each of the last two years in steals.

He scored in double figures on 17 occasions over his career at Milwaukee, including a career-high 19 points against UW-La Crosse in 2017. As a junior, Barnes scored a season-high 18 points at Green Bay to go with five assists in February and tallied 16 points at North Dakota on Dec. 9. His best game as a freshman was a homecoming at DePaul when he scored 14 points in 21 minutes.

Tyler Hamilton

Hamilton joins the Tribe after earning his undergraduate degree from Penn, majoring in communications and minoring in cinema and media studies. He appeared in 42 games over his first two season with the Quakers, including a start, but was limited to six contests over the last two seasons due to injuries. Hamilton and Penn won the Ivy League Championship in 2018. He averaged 1.8 points and 1.2 rebounds per game during his time with the Quakers.

"Tyler joins our program after a successful career at Penn, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018," Fischer said. "He is a very versatile player on both ends of the floor and competes extremely hard. Tyler brings leadership and an understanding of what it takes to win at a high level which will really help us this upcoming season."

He enjoyed his best game as a collegiate in making his first start in the season finale of his freshman year in 2016. Hamilton recorded career-highs of 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals at Princeton. Hamilton's father, Derrek, played collegiately at Southern Mississippi and was a third-round pick of the New Jersey Nets. He spent two seasons in the NBA before enjoying a 13-year career in Europe. Tyler's brother, Kyle, will be a freshman safety on the Notre Dame football team.

The duo joins the incoming freshman trio of Miguel Ayesa (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy/ National Top Sports Institute), Rainers Hermanovskis (Smiltene, Latvia) and Ben Wight (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington).

W&M returns nine players from a season ago, including pair of starters in senior Nathan Knight and junior Luke Loewe, for the program's first campaign under head coach Dane Fischer. Knight has established himself as one of the top big men in the country and is one of only two returning finalists for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Senior 7-foot transfer Andy Van Vliet, who sat out last season as a transfer from Wisconsin, bolsters the Tribe roster along with the return of experienced players in junior Jihar Williams and sophomores Quinn Blair, Thornton Scott and Mehkel Harvey.
