HARRISONBURG, Va. - Following its first setback in the CAA Baseball Championship, the William & Mary baseball team looks to keep its CAA title hopes alive by coming out of its first elimination game. That journey starts when it faces regular season champion Elon on Saturday, May 25. First pitch is set for noon. The winner of the Tribe-Phoenix game advances to the CAA title round and has to beat UNCW twice starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
W&M News and Notes
- After a pair of masterful pitching and defensive performances in the opening two wins, the William & Mary baseball team dropped its first game at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on Friday evening at Eagle Field at Veteran's Park. UNCW used six extra-base hits among its eight on the night to score five runs over the sixth and seventh innings to pull out the 5-1 victory in the winner's bracket match-up.
- W&M and Elon meet for the 29th time in series history on Saturday at Eagle Field. The Phoenix lead the all-time series 17-9, including sweeping a three-game series at Plumeri Park in the middle of April. However, the Tribe won the only ever CAA Tournament meeting between the two schools 5-2 exactly two-years ago today. In the regular season, senior
Owen Socher led the Tribe in the series. He went 4-for-10 (.400) with two doubles, a homer, and two RBI in the set. Sophomore
Matt McDermott finished the three-game set 3-for-8 with a RBI.
- Freshman
Jack Cone is enjoying his first trip to the CAA postseason. The rookie is leading the Tribe going 6-for-12 with a double and a RBI. He is coming off of his best game of the tournament as he tied a career-high with three hits, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI against UNCW.
- W&M's starting pitching has also been exceptional in the tournament as well. The trio of senior
Bodie Sheehan, junior
Wade Strain, and freshman
Zach Tsakounis has pitched 20 innings allowing just two runs on 16 hits, with eight strikeouts. Junior
Nick Butts gets the ball in today's first game, making his third start of the season.
